Reds: Art Day
We explored how we can use our bodies to create various types of art. Children were presented with the challenge of tracing their hand and creating something new from it. The children made chickens, turkeys to “hand monsters,” and abstract designs.
Have a look!
Blues & Reds: Monkey Bread
See what the Blues and Reds cooked together this past Thursday, February 3rd.
Blues: Fall Art Project
Part of our goal for the Fall, on Blues Art Day, was to document the students’ work. Based on student interest, taking pictures led to creating a Stop Motion Animation project.
Ellie Balk, Afterschool Blues’ art teacher, presented the kids with various materials to work with. The pieces they made evolved into characters that each group then used in their Stop Motion Animation scene.
Blues teachers put the scenes together to create the following film. Enjoy!

Reds: Experiments/Explorations Day
In the interest of exploring the importance of bones in our own bodies we created a group challenge for the students. They were asked to form groups, and build a person together. The person had to stand on its own, and it had to be as
tall as possible. The materials they were given to use for this project were play-dough, rubber bands, and popsicle sticks. Here are a few pictures of the experience and what we came up with together.
Reds: Art Day
Over the course of five weeks the Reds (the Core Afterschool group for children 4s -1st grade) experimented and explored various artistic skills such as paper manipulation, collage and sculpture.
Starting with shapes and lines we used colored pencils to simply explore basic concepts we would use for more in depth activities in the later weeks.
Moving on to paper manipulation we learned about the different ways we can fold, cut and tear paper in order to create different shapes that are 2D and 3D. From there we worked on collages that brought elements of the line and shape drawings and the paper manipulations.
Next we used cardboard and the paper manipulations to make 3D collages.
Lastly we used pipe cleaners to create 3D sculpture that existed beyond paper and the kids could really hold and interact with their artwork.
Reds: Cooking Day
On the last two Cooking Mondays (11/1, 11/8), the Reds enjoyed making a classic Italian-American dish, gnocchi and marinara sauce. The first week we chopped up vegetables, mixed and cooked down the sauce. The second week we made home made gnocchi mixing the potatoes, egg and flour. After mixing the ingredients the kids kneaded the dough, rolled it out and cut it up. The kids loved watching the gnocchi float to the top of the boiling water. We all really enjoyed eating our homemade creation!
