5th Grade Summer Assignment -Written Review

The book The Magic Tree House: Soccer on Sunday by Mary Pope Osborne takes place in Mexico City in the year 1970.  The main characters are Jack, Annie, and Roberto.   The main problem is that Jack and Annie cannot find the secret to greatness from Péle.

The first event that changed the direction of the story is that Jack and Annie meet Roberto on the metro.   The second event is that they play soccer with Roberto’s friends.  The problem of finding Péle’s secret of greatness gets resolved.   In the text, it says, “ ‘Enthusiasm,’ said Roberto, ‘Enthusiasm is everything.’  Suddenly the ring exploded with light. ‘That’s it!’ cried Jack.”

I did not enjoy this book.  It was too suspenseful.  For example, in the metro, the crowds are so big that Jack and Annie can’t see where they should get off.   Another example is at half time in the soccer game when Jack can’t find Annie and a guard makes him go back to his seat, even though he and Annie had agreed they would meet at her seat.   Third, it was boring when they were playing the soccer game because it was basically the same thing repeating over and over again.   A reader who likes suspense would like this book better.   I rate this book 2 stars.
