   Emily

In the morning I wake up and go to my desk. On my desk there was a little open journal that I got yesterday. I sit down on my fuzzy, hot pink swirly chair and start to write. My name is Emily. I am a girl. I am ten years old turning eleven in four months. I have I light brown curly hair, up to my shoulders. Tomorrow I am going to start school. This is my first year at this school. I changed schools because at my old school I had no friends, no one liked me. I have to admit, I am not a very “social” person. I like animals a lot. Some people say that I like animals TOO much. At recess I would just watch the birds or dig in the dirt for worms. One day I actually found one. I picked it up and ran over to a cluster of kids. Once they saw the wiggling dirt covered worm they started to scream in disgust. (Personally, I do not understand them. I think that is really cool). That happened in first grade and this  I am going to be in fifth grade After that day until the end of school I kept all of my (amazing) discoveries to myself. My classmates’ meanness had just accumulated over the years, so this year I decided to change schools.

At dinner the night before my first day in my new school, I was really nervous. For dinner I had pasta and Parmesan cheese. After dinner, my mom, dad and I watched TV until 9:30. My mom said that I had to go to sleep early that night. I got tucked into bed and my mom closed my door and turned the lights off. That night I could not sleep. All of my thoughts rushed into my head. I had so much to think about. Finally I was so tired it hurt to keep my eyes open. My head fell down onto my pillow and the next thing I knew it was morning.

I woke up with the sun shining on my bed. The cool West Chester breeze wafted through my open window. I looked at my clock still half asleep. The clock read 8:00. Oh shoot, school starts at 8:15! I jumped out of bed and put on anything I could find. I stuffed some pancakes into my mouth. Eleven minutes later I was just leaving but then I remembered that I was forgetting my bag. I quickly ran into the house and grabbed my bag. Then I sprinted all the way to school.

At 8:20 I entered the school panting. I walked into the principal’s office and I saw an old looking man and a girl sitting in a chair. The principal said, “Hello, my name is Mr. Thomas and I am your principal at PS 691. This is Lilly. She is in the the same class as you and in most of your subjects. She will make sure that you know where all of your classes are by the end of this month, at most.” Lilly introduced herself to me and I introduced myself to her. We talked while walking to the classroom. She asked me where I used to go to school and where I used to live. The principal’s office was really close to the classroom. The next thing I knew we were at the door of my new classroom. The sign on the door read Miss Flora’s fifth grade and then there were a lot of names taped onto the door. I assumed that those were the kids in the class.

When Lilly and I entered the room, the whole room went silent. I could feel my face turning red from twenty kids staring at me like I was an alien. After an awkward thirty seconds the teacher finally introduced me to the class. A few minutes later I had my own desk in the very back row. I sat through the whole lesson examining everyone and looking at their name tags.

The first half of the day went by in a flash. All I can remember was being introduced thousands of times. We had math, reading, science and then recess. Everyone was so excited for recess. We all lined up and waited for the teacher. When we got to recess it looked really boring to me. It was just an empty field of concrete ground. I spotted a bench, so I just walked over there and sat. Thirty minutes later the teachers called us in for lunch. The lunch was chicken fingers and french fries. I sat at the end of a table all by myself. I was really boring. I couldn’t wait for the end of the day. Finally the final bell rang and I was dismissed from school.

I walked home by myself from school. I looked up at the sky and it looked like it was about to rain. I picked up my pace. When I arrived at my door I heard a crack of thunder and it began to pour. I quickly opened the door and ran into the cozy house. I slammed the door behind me and said, “Mom! I’m home.” I heard footsteps of her running down the stairs and then I was smothered by hugs and kisses. A few seconds later she started ask me questions. It was like a river, the flow of questions never stopped.

She asked me “How was your day?”

“It was fine.”

“Are the kids nice?”

“Yes I guess.”

“Did you have fun?”

“I guess, sure.”

About twenty five minutes later I was upstairs in my room doing my homework.

At 7:39 I was called down for dinner. My dad had just entered the house he was taking off his shoes when I got downstairs. I came over to him and gave him a quick hug. I ran the kitchen table and got into my seat. Tonight for dinner there was chicken. We ate in silence until my dad decided to say something.

“How was your day,” he asked me.

“It was fine.” I answered. I thought to myself “I could have told him that I did not have fun and that I did not make any friends but I thought that it would be better if I did not tell him.” After that he decided to not talk to me. After everyone was done eating we brought up our plates and I went back upstairs to finish my homework.

About an hour later my dad opened my door and he said to go to bed and that it was late. Fifteen minutes later I was in my PJ’s and curled up in my bed. I heard a knock on my door. I said “Come in.” It was my mom. She walked in slowly and quietly. She sat at the foot of my bed and asked if I was alright. I said that I was fine but she could tell that I was lying. I decided to actually tell her what was wrong. After I told her what was wrong she said “I’m so sorry. I think you should give it some time. Don’t worry I’m sure that before the end of this year you will make at least one new friend.” I went to sleep thinking about those words that she said to me. “I hope that she is right,” I thought.

In the next month and a half nothing exciting happened. Everyday I go to school, go home and do my homework and then go to bed. The same routine over, over and over again. Every day is the same trying, dull and boring day. Every day when I wake up I dread going to school and every day when I get to school I can’t wait until school is over.

Today it was Wednesday morning. I woke up but I did not feel like getting out of bed. I just layed on my on my back and thought about the today. I think that I remember that the teacher said that we were getting a new student today. I was sort of excited to meet the new kid. I got out of bed and got ready for school. I got to school a little early, so I had to wait until they opened the doors.

I was the first person in the classroom. In the corner of the room I saw a girl talking to the teacher. I thought, “that must be the new girl!” I was right. I was called over by the teacher. I walked over to them. The teacher introduced me to her. Her name is Charlotte. She has the same light brown, curly hair, up to her shoulders as I do.

Just then the rest of the class came in. I took my seat and waited for class to begin. Our teacher introduced Charlotte to the rest of the class. After that the school day was pretty normal. We went to our classes but we did introduce Charlotte to all of the teachers. After almost half of our classes we went out to recess.

We walked out to recess. I walked to the bench and sat down. After two minutes or so, I looked up from the ground. On the other bench I saw Charlotte. She was all by herself. I was so surprised. I did not think that on her first day at school she would be left alone at recess. I walked over to her and started to talk to her. She was really shy but when I got to know her she was really fun. We talked about A lot of different things. We talked about, Where she used to go to school and where I used to go to school before I went here. We also just talked about we liked to do.  Before I knew it recess was over.

For the rest of the day I was in every class with her and we talked to each other whenever we could. When the final bell rang at the end of the day I was sort of sad. I said goodbye to Charlotte and walked out of the classroom. After I had just walked past the two big archway doors I heard someone call my name. I whipped my head around to see who it was. It was Charlotte. Once she caught up to me she was panting.

She asked, “Do you have anything to do today.”

“No, totally free,” I answered.

“Do you want to come to my house now?”

“Sure I would love to.”

When we arrived at Charlotte’s house, we knocked on her door and waited for it to open. While we waited for the door to open I looked around. I thought to myself “This looks just like my house. It has the same beige door. Around the house there were almost bare trees and yellow, orange and red leaves covering the ground”  I heard footsteps coming and then the door opened. It was Charlotte’s mom. Once my shoes were off and my coat was hung up I asked for a phone to call my mom. It was a voicemail. I told her where I was and when I was coming home and then I hung up. The rest of the afternoon went by really quickly. Before I knew, it was 7:00. I packed up all of my things and left their house.

I jogged all of the way home. All kinds of thoughts were in my head. When I got to the door I could smell the fresh pizza that had just come out of the oven. I quickly opened the door and went inside. I put all of my things down and sat down for dinner. I was famished I devoured the pizza in no time. I finish dinner and went up stairs and got ready for bed. Thirty minutes later, I was in bed lying on my back and thinking. “My mom was right. I did give it some time and I did make a friend this year.”

I closed my little journal with a slam. I looked at what I had just written it took up half of the journal. I looked at the clock beside me, it was 12:00 pm. It was almost lunch time already! I had to hurry up and get ready because soon Charlotte was coming over to play.
