My Poem

 A Blanket of Night

The flowing river

alters its tune

to a small whisper

as the warm

specked lights grow bigger

They are the stars

reflecting on the water

creating a blanket of night

At first this poem was a haiku but there was more I wanted to add so I changed it from a haiku. The elements found in this poem are line breaks, imagery, metaphors. I really like this poem because of the way it creates an image in my head and the description.

My Map Project

Stella Map Project 4

I would like to name that piece “NYC Sunset”

I created this piece of art by beginning with the backdrop. I really wanted to show want a NYC Sunset looked like so I painted a sunset and the water. Then using the map I cut out a skyline. Some of the things I learned while making the piece of work is how to transition between colors especially in watercolors. My favorite part of this piece is the sunset and the way I showed how things get farther by making the map darker the farther back they were. If I could change something about it, it would be the map cuts. I think when I cut the map I could have cut it in a more neat way. While making it I was surprised that I didn’t second guess myself. In some other projects I have taken a longer time because I second guessed myself this time I just stuck to the original plan.

Diary

Today is just one day closer to Phulans wedding, she is getting married to her wonderful cousin. She seems so much more excited after trying the dresses on and everything. I will be happy when she is happy with her husband and family. We have just started our journey to the home of Shabanu and Phulans cousins.  I think Shabanu is very excited for her wedding too!!! Phulans wedding dress is so beautiful and I have never made one before. It if made of yellow silk and I have embroidered some silver and gold thread on the bodice as well as some tassels. Another key piece to a wedding dress in mirrors so I sewed some onto the dress too. My husband seems to be a little shaken up by the death of Grandfather. He died after the huge sandstorm we had. It didn’t help when we saw a dead man also caught in the sand storm who had died. Thats all that is happening. I can’t wait for Phulans weddingIMG_2771

Making Chapatis

Screenshot 2016-05-02 at 9.22.40 AM

Chapatis are a flat bread that is eaten with most Pakistani and India dishes. Chapatis are easy to make for all meals. It is a whole wheat flat bread that is cooked using a flat skillet called tava. Chapati is made from a specific type of flour that is milled from durum wheat. Durum wheat is high in protein and low in gluten with a hard wheat kernel. This lends itself to a quick baking bread, like chapati, rather than using it for a baked bread because it would not rise and be very dense. When eaten at breakfast I spread some butter of the chapatis

Ingredients

Note: This recipe makes 10-12 chapatis

  1.  2 cups of wheat flour or durum wheat atta
  2.  1 cup of milk (The milk makes softer chapatis)
  3. 1 tsp. salt (optional)
  4. 1-2 tsp. ghee (optional)
  5. A couple drops of water (optional)

Step 1

Add wheat flour and salt (optional) to the tava. Mix

Step 2

Add milk and to the mixture

Step 3

To make the soft dough, use your fingers and move them in a circular pattern, while adding water to the mixture (water is optional). By using this way you will allow the air into the mixture, which helps in making soft chapatis.

Step 4

Knead dough for 1 minute

Step 5

Cover the dough with a bowl turned upside down. Set it aside for 15-20 minutes.

Step 6

Knead the dough well and create 10-12 equal sized balls and press.

Step 7

Take a ball and dip it in the wheat flour.

Step 8

Roll out the flattened ball into the size of a poori using a rolling pin and sprinkle some wheat flour on top.

Step 9

Heat a tava. Drop a rolled-out dough on the tava, which heated.

Step 10

Wait for few minutes then flip the chapati over when you see color change

Step 11

Slightly press the chapati with the chapati press

Step 12

Cook until both sides have golden brown bubbles

Step 13

Remove from the tava and enjoy!

My Poem

The glistening stream

Alters its song as the warm

Light of the moon shines

Recently in Humanities we have been learning about poetry and how to write it. So far we have learned about 2 different types of poems. One of them is a Haiku which is what my poem is. Haiku poems have 5 syllables in the first line 7 in the second and 5 again in the third. The other is a Cinquain, we learned three different types of Cinquains. The first type had one word in the first and adding one word each line until you get to the 5th line then you do one again. In the second type…. Line 1: 1 noun, Line 2: 2 adjectives, Line 3: 3 -ing words, Line 4: 1 phrase, and Line 5: Another word for the noun. The third type you started with 2 syllables and adding 2 more each time until you get to line five where you are back to 2.  l started with my own prompt. Most Haiku poems are about nature and my prompt was the beginning of night and how everything changes. After I came up with my prompt I started writing. At first it was all about the moon but then I wanted to show how things change when the moon comes up. I really liked the way I used line breaks in this poem and the way I showed transition. I am really proud of this piece and hope to write more like this.

Writing Parzival Essays

In Humanities we are working on writing essays for a book we read called Parzival. My essays argues that Parziavl’s upbringing hindered in life. It is hard to find all the evidence to back up my argument. It is also hard to find a strong sentence to write. My essay is still a work in progress but I feel pretty good about it.

My Creative Writing Piece!

This is my creative writing piece. It is about a very tall man and his struggles. After writing the piece my writing partner edited it then I revised. I am really proud of my piece and hope to do more writing in the future.

My name is Juan. I have dark brown hair and brown eyes, I’m pretty plain but I’ve  always been taller than most of the people in my life. When I was in elementary school I was always in the back of school photos. In middle school I was taller than the tallest teacher, who was 6’9. Then there was high school where I was teased a lot but they couldn’t hurt me, I was to tall. They started to appreciate me when I joined the basketball team.

Now I am working in an office. A plain, boring old office. There is a dark brown desk, a light brown chair and a grey rug. The gray rug has black triangular patterns and it clashes with the beige walls. Every morning I bang my head on the dark oak door frame because I am too tall to fit through. When I sit at my desk my boney knees bang against the underneath. For work I have to wear certain clothes but the pants I need are never long enough. My feet are always crammed into shoes that don’t fit me. Shopping for beds is particularly depressing. I always sleep curled up into a ball and I just fit. Something that is a part of my daily routine is getting jokes like “How is the weather up there?” or “At least you know when it rains first.” Of course when you have long legs you must have long arms. I must be the clumsiest person you ever met. Every time I turn something falls over. When I walk I trip on my own limbs. Even the office had to baby proof everything because of the ‘clients’. I know they were protecting the office from me.

It was just like any day. I walked into the office, banged my head on the door frame and spilled the coffee on my boss and I thought she was going to comfort me, but she didn’t. She yelled and yelled and yelled. Before I knew it I was fired. Fired from the boring old office I had been working at for years. Fired by the woman in the purple pantsuit. I gathered all my things and left the glass building on 18th street.

I was looking for a job for months. I sat in my hard wooden chair searching for anything I could pass by time with. Then one day I was flipping through a newspaper and I saw this “Are you tall, handsome and incredibly muscular? Call 1-800-RUNWAYS!” So, you guessed it, I called. So what if I only fit one of the job descriptions, I would try my best. I was greeted on the phone by a woman with such a high voice I thought she was 4 years old. She told me to come over right away. I walked over to Time Square and into one of the buildings.

As I walked in I was greeted by the same women that answered the phone. She pointed me to room 131 and watched me strangely as I walked away. The room was silent when I entered. No one spoke a word of english so it was a bit awkward. The photographer pointed me to the dressing room. I peeked in and of course I was modeling pants. As I told you before pants and I don’t get along. I pulled on the first pair of jeans with no confidence in keeping this job. I walked out of the dressing room trying to seem shorter than I actually was. The photographer took one look at me and asked me to leave. I was fired on my first day for “string bean legs”. Once again I was looking for a job.

Thanksgiving was coming around and we were going to have a family get together. On Thanksgiving I saw all my relatives including my uncle who is a famous artist. He offered me a job as a painter for his company. I obviously took it.

My first painting I did was a portrait. I sat down on the stool and set up the easel. The lights in the room shone onto another chair which I assumed would sit the client.  The women that I was painting walked in and sat down in front of me. She growled like I had wronged her. Then she struck a pose and I started painting. I probably should have told my uncle that I am not the best painter. When I finished the women took one look at the painting and screamed. Then she ran. And I was fired.

I had given up on finding a job. Maybe I would marry a rich woman for her fortune. I walked with my head down everywhere I went except for the one time it counted. I was walking through Central Park when I saw an old lady, about 70 crying in her hands. I walked over and asked what was wrong. She said her cat was stuck in a tree and pointed to a ginger cat. At first I thought who brings their cat to the park but then I realized I needed to help her. I walked over to the tree. Its leaves were turning orange which made it even harder to find the cat. I reached up, felt around and grasped something furry. I pulled it down safely and handed it to the old lady. She thanked me profusely and told me I was a hero.

Now I work at a fire station and my job is to save animals. It’s not the best job in the world but I love it. I am married and have 2 kids who are very tall. Everyone respects me now. My old workplace wants me back, the model agency wants me back, and my uncle wants me back but they only want me because I am special now and they lost their chance.

Discovery Day

Screen Shot 2015-06-03 at 3.41.11 PM

On Discovery Day my group and I went to the Hayden planetarium. I learned a lot about space because of the scavenge hunt we did. We went to the I-MAX theater and watched Dark Universe. We also watched a 5 minute video. While doing the scavenge hunt we were all so excited and really wanted to win. In the end everyone tied with 3 points. It was a lot of fun
