I recently just got back from Spring Break where I went with my world language class to China! I really enjoyed the food and going to the different cities. It was a very educational experience and overall I had an amazing time!

A couple weekends ago I went to the Women’s March! Unfortunately we didn’t get to actually march but there was a band of drummers who were keeping everyone excited. There were also a lot of amazing signs. Overall it was a great experience because although we didn’t actually march, so many people were there and that’s what made an impact.

Last week my social justice group and I went to City Hall! We interviewed Sara Shoner who is the commissioner of gender equity. When we interviewed her we found that we knew more than she did! She also pointed out that most of the staff in the bullpen were women which was very inspiring. Overall, this was an amazing experience.

Over winter break I read my social justice book Periods Gone Public by Jennifer Weiss-Wolf. It was a very educational book and I definitely learned a lot about how different cultures and religions look at menstruation. This book definitely deepened my understanding of the stigma surrounding menstruation and now I can do even more as I continue my project.

Once we chose our topic for the Colonial Museum, we had to write ten notecards about that topic. Notecards are paragraphs that we can use in our research paper. My topic is medicine in Colonial America. For my tenth notecard I wrote about women in medicine. I thought this topic was very interesting so I thought it was best to save it for last. I am proud of this notecard because I got a 3.5 on it!

This is my second Making 13 Colonies Homework assignment. I am most proud of this one because even though it was the beginning of the year, I got pretty good grades on it. I also really liked the topic that this assignment pertained to. I had a lot to say about it so it was easy for me to write this paper.

In this post I’m going to reflect on three poems:

 

Voices of the Ocean

Waves

Blue and white

Rolling,

crashing,

falling

Washing up on the shore

And coming back in again

 

While the wind blows

Morphing the waves into shape

There is a voice

Deep in the ocean

That hasn’t spoken

Slowly coming

But not yet

Washing up on the shore

And coming back in again

 

This is one of my favorite poems. It is called Voices of the Ocean. At first I was aiming for a cinquain but then I wanted it to be a bit longer so I changed it! I have repetition, imagery, line breaks, rhythm, and rhyme. I really liked how it turned out. I also chose this poem to share at the poetry breakfast because I am really proud of it!

The Yellow Brick Road by Olivia and Olivia

Walking down the yellow brick road

After the Wicked Witch showed

With the broomstick she rode

And laughing like a toad

 

Stopped by a scarecrow, on my way

He was clumsy, and made of hay

He wanted a brain to think in such a way

But that day was not today

 

In the distance, we see a shimmer

It is a glowing tin man, whose shimmer gets dimmer

We pour some oil on his rust

That slowly turns into dust

He is so hollow, in need of trust

We will get him a heart, for love, we must

 

On our way to the Emerald City

I had to start being witty

When a cowardly lion came acting like a kitty

He needed some courage to feel pretty

 

I see a field of flowers

I think poppies might have some powers

The last time I slept wasn’t for hours

Then the witch and her monkeys said, “The flowers are ours!”

 

My eyelids have froze

I think I am starting to dose

I will be back before the light will dispose

Let’s hope the gates won’t close

 

We just woke up

We’re ready to go in

So is Toto my pup

Everyone has a grin

 

We walk through the gates

It’s a wonderful sight

We hope our wishes will be granted

At least before tonight

 

The wizard is a fright

He says that by tonight

He needs the broom from the witch of the west

How will we get it? She is such a pest

 

We sneak in the tower

But I get caught

I hope that Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin Man

don’t miss their shot

 

I am stuck with the witch

But my friends act quick

They break through the door

Luckily I can run as fast as her broomstick

 

She follows me down the staircase

I see a pail filled with water

I see her ugly face

So I splash her and she melts

I can’t spot her!

 

Back to the wizard we go

With her broomstick in hand

With the Lion, Tin Man, And Scarecrow

We have finished what we have planned

 

 

This is also one of my favorite poems. Olivia and I wrote this together and we wanted to tell a story! We chose the Wizard of Oz. This isn’t any specific type of poem. There is rhyme, repetition, rhythm, and imagery. I also liked how this poem turned out. I really like the flow and the story element. Overall, I really like it!

Late November

Leaves on the sidewalk

The wind is getting stronger

Winter’s in the air

 

This is a haiku! There are 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line, and 5 syllables on the last line as well. I really liked how this poem turned out as well but it is not my best one.

Today we had a quiz on the how the different body systems interconnect. We had to put at least two inputs and/or outputs for each system. This is my quiz. I think I did a decent job but I could have added a little more…
