My Fiction Story!

1 in a Million

by Olivia Bagan

Chapter 1

“Who wants to read The History of the Universe in 500 Pages for homework tonight?” Asked my teacher Amber.

Everyone raised their hand except for me,

“Do we have to?” I asked.

Everyone turned around and stared at me like I was an alien creature. Once again, I am the one who stands out.

My name is Quinn Blakley and I live in a small town called Bleachville. I’m an 11 year old girl. I am not like everyone else in my town. I have brown eyes, brown hair, and olive skin. I like art, wearing clothes I upcycled, and doing modern dance.

In Bleachville, everyone has blonde hair, white clothes made specifically for them by the tailor, pale skin, and blue eyes. Even my parents are like that. Everyone is super smart and is always in the library.

I personally don’t like school. It’s like a punishment I can never escape. My parents always scold me about not having good grades while my 15 year old sister, Anna, is the most perfect daughter they could ever dream of. She always does extra credit assignments and always finishes her projects on time. On the other hand, I can barely finish my assignments on time, and you don’t even want to know about my projects…

As always, I was caught in another embarrassing moment. I should have kept my opinion to myself. Why did I have to raise my hand? Why did I ask that stupid question? Then the most popular girl in school, Alison Carlindor, says,

“I’m not surprised she doesn’t want to read The History of the Universe in 500 Pages. She can barely read the books we read in Kindergarten.”

Everyone in my history class laughed at me as I burrowed my face into the palms of my hands.

Chapter 2

Even at home I feel different. My family is like one giant computer that is working perfectly but then there’s one tiny glitch. That glitch is me. My parents don’t allow me to help prepare dinner because I’m always knocking over everything.

I can’t stop thinking about what happened in class today. Alison Carlindor is the most popular girl in school. She has perfect straight blond hair, the most stunning outfits, and flawless skin. She’s the queen bee of middle school. I stopped thinking about class as my mother called me for dinner.

As we are eating the same dinner as always, chicken, white rice, and green beans, my sister starts bragging about how she got an A+ on her science essay about evolution. Then, she starts talking about how she got an A+ on every subject on her report card. And then, she starts talking about how her teachers want to enroll her in advanced classes. And that’s when I just can’t take it anymore. I felt like my head was going to explode. I stood up from my chair and screamed,

“Will you ever stop talking about how “perfect” you are? It’s always about you, you, and you!”

My parents stood up and sent me to my room… When I sat on my bed, I had an idea. I was going to run away from home.

Chapter 3

I took out my black dufflebag and packed everything I needed. My toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, hair comb, my favorite clothes, my phone, a blanket, a pillow, a rain tarp, my sleeping bag, water bottles, trail mix, a radio, extra batteries, a flashlight, needle and thread, fabric, pencils, and paper. I put on my black leggings and sweatshirt and climbed out my window which possibly wasn’t the best idea when I realized my room was on the second story of the house.

I threw my dufflebag into the backyard to see how bad the fall was. There was good news and bad news. The good news was that I could probably jump down and not get hurt. But the bad news was that I just threw all of my stuff into the backyard so I can’t use anything to lower myself down. I tried to figure out a way to get down in my head. It was like a thousand tiny little gears just clicked in my brain. I just had to jump! It wasn’t that far down compared to the giant tree in the woods I play on! I braced myself for the fall. 3, 2, 1! As my feet hit the ground, I could hear the leaves crunching. They sounded like when you bite into a fresh apple. I grabbed my dufflebag and ran into the woods.

Chapter 4

I found the tree I usually play on deep in the woods and decided to set up camp there. The tree is a giant willow tree surrounded by little pine trees. The willow tree has big sturdy branches under it’s outer layer of leaves. I find the two top branches that are parallel from each other next to the trunk that has a little peg. I hung my duffle bag onto the peg and take out the blanket and hung it and wrapped it so it was like a hammock. I put my sleeping bag on there and put the rain tarp hanging from two little branches incase it rains.

I got my pillow and climbed into my sleeping bag and slowly drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 5

As I woke up in the morning I heard voices in the distance. They sounded like children my age. I slowly made my way out of the tree and looked around to see who was there. I climbed back up the tree, packed my bag, and walked around the woods to see if I could find them. I heard them again. I thought they were coming from my right. I ran through the woods as their voices got louder. I heard more voices. I found a clearing in the woods that had a small pathway leading to a small village. I walked into the village as a girl who looks just like me walked up to me,

“Hi I’m Sidney Walker. Welcome to Greoville.”

Chapter 6

After Sidney and I talked for a little bit, she walked me to her house. She introduced me to her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Walker. They are very kind. She showed me her room. I was speechless. There were paintings all over her walls, she had a manikin, a sewing machine, everything I could ever want.

“Oh my god! You have the best room in the world! I never get to do this stuff even though it’s my favorite thing to do in the world!” I said.

“Why don’t you get to do this?” Sidney asked.

Then I told her the whole story of how I got here and what life was like back at home.

“Wow. That’s so sad. You’re welcome to stay with me if you’d like.” said Sidney

“Really? Thank you so much!” I said.

She showed me to the two twin beds in her room. They both had ombré turquoise bedding.

“You can sleep here.” Sidney said as she pointed to the bed on the left.

I unpacked all of my stuff: My toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, hair comb, my favorite clothes, my phone, a blanket, a pillow, a rain tarp, my sleeping bag, water bottles, trail mix, a radio, extra batteries, a flashlight, needle and thread, fabric, pencils, and paper.

“You have a lot of stuff!” Sidney said.

“I know.” I said.

“Let me take some of that stuff and put it in the closet.” Sidney offered.

“Thanks.”I said.

Sidney took my blanket, pillow, rain tarp, sleeping bag, radio, extra batteries, flashlight, and water bottles.

I looked at my phone to see what time it was. It was around dinner time.

“When are we going to have chicken, white rice, and green beans?” I asked Sidney.

“We don’t eat that here. We make our own dinner every night.” Sidney said.

I was shocked. I didn’t have to eat the same disgusting dinner!

“What are we eating tonight?” I asked.

“Dumplings!” Said Sidney.

Chapter 7

I’ve only had dumplings once on a field trip in social studies when we were learning about the asian culture. We went to a dim sum restaurant and I got the pork dumplings. Everyone hated the food but I thought it was the best thing in the world.

I was so excited to eat the dumplings, I thought I was going to explode. As soon as I sunk my teeth into the dumpling I was transported into dumpling heaven. I could see little dumplings with golden halos with white wings floating in the clouds. I quickly finished my dinner and went upstairs for bed.

I put on my pyjamas and brushed my teeth and climbed into bed. I fluffed up my pillow and slowly fell asleep.

I had a weird dream that night. It was almost like a vision. I saw my house and my sister was in her room crying looking at family albums of us when we were little. Then I saw my parents sitting on the porch calling the police. I saw all of the people in my class at school putting posters on every corner looking for me. Then I realized, I had to go home.

The next morning I woke up really early, packed my bag, ran downstairs but just as I was about to leave I heard someone.

“Where are you going?” Asked Sidney.

“I have to go home.” I said.

“But didn’t you love it here?” Asked Sidney.

“I can’t just leave my family.” I replied.

“I understand.” Said Sidney

“I’ll miss you Sidney. I’ll try to see you again.” I said

“I’ll miss you too.” Said Sidney.

Sidney gave me a hug as I walked out the door and into the woods.

Chapter 8

I was right outside of the clearing when I turned around and I couldn’t remember which way to go. When I looked back to see where the clearing was, I couldn’t see it. I was completely lost. I felt like Hansel and Gretel when they got lost in the woods. I tried to remember my surroundings from when I came into the woods. The only thing I remembered is that I only walked forward. So I started walking forward. After around an hour, I found the willow tree! It was almost sundown so I sprinted to Bleachville! I found my house and bursted through the door. My entire family was eating dinner and time seemed to freeze for a second. Everyone was expressionless and everyone started  crying when my sister stood up and buried me into her arms.

“Never leave again.” My sister whispered.

“Don’t worry.” I whispered back.

My parents joined in and this was the first time we all appreciated each other as a family in a long time.

Chapter 9

The next day at school I walked in the door and everyone welcomed me back. Even Alison gave me a warm welcome. At lunch I sat with Alison and her friends and taught them how to upcycle and draw kawaii. They loved it! Soon everyone wore their own designs and we were all our own individual.

The End!
