Set in 15th century France Sybella, one of the “handmaidens of death” carries out her assassin’s commission set by the questionable Abbess, who claims to have received her instructions from Mortain otherwise known as Death himself. He has christened all of his children, Sybella being one of them. They are the handmaidens of death, killing those they are instructed. Sybella joined the convent after a horrific childhood as daughter of D’Albret, a sadistic tyrant taking over Brittany against the beloved Duchess. Sybella must go back to D’Albret’s household to try to kill him. She also has to complete the task of rescuing the Beast of Waroch, a legendary warrior of/for the duchess from her father’s prison, then travel with him to the Duchess whom he must protect. Sybella’s journey helps her find herself and realize that she is not just D’Albret’s miscreant. I strongly recommend this YA fiction book to all 13+
