Crazy Food Trends of 2018!
- Rainbow foods:
Ranging from rainbow ice cream to grilled cheese you name it, you want it, you can buy it in a rainbow. It started with more normal things like ice cream, cakes, cookies, but moved on to things like rainbow sushi, burgers, and pasta! Is this a food you have tried? Did you like or dislike it?
- Food with charcoal
Another big food trend this year was food with activated charcoal in it. There are many different foods such as black bread, ice cream, lattes and many more. Activated charcoal can also be used for teeth whitening, also a popular trend in 2018. It is proven to be very good at absorbing toxins and is often used as a poison remedy. Have you tried this trend?
- Crazy donuts
From crazy flavors to toppings, you can find a weird combination donut pretty much anywhere in the city. From bacon donuts to chili icing, there are many different types that you can find all over NYC. Have you tried a crazy donut? What is the craziest flavor/combination you’ve had? Did you like it or not?
- Acai bowls
Acai bowls are very popular at the moment! Acai is small blackish/purple berries. These are mixed with other various fruits and juices, which creates a thick smoothie-like texture. On top of the smoothie, there are toppings like fruit, honey, coconut, and granola. There are many options and combinations you can choose from. Have you had an acai bowl? If not, I recommend trying one!
- Tacro:
A tacro is a croissant taco. A taco where the shell is made of that flakey, crunchy croissant dough. This trend started in San Francisco, CA at a restaurant called Vive La Tarte in the Ferry Building. Here is a quote from article about the Tacro: “ The tacro has only been for sale for about two weeks, but already appears to be a big hit, perhaps even more for its appearance than its taste. The buzz surrounding the tacro has been so intense that Houghton says the Ferry Building stand has sold out on weekends.” There are more than 140 public posts on Instagram using the hashtag #tacro! Have you tried one, if so did you like it?
- Avocado everything:
Avocado is a huge food trend! Avocado toast, salad, ice cream, pancakes, smoothies, burgers, you can add avocado to pretty much everything! In Amsterdam there is even a restaurant called the avocado show, where the whole menu is all avocado recipes! I went there this summer and got avocado pancakes! They were, surprisingly, very good! Personally, I like avocados, what are your thoughts?
- Rolled ice cream:
Rolled ice cream is so good! I recommend trying if you haven’t and there is even a rolled ice cream store near school, called ICE NY! Here is a video of the process of making it:

So here’s how it works: A staff member pours a base liquid onto the ice-cold metal surface (holding at 8 degrees, hence the name). As of press time, 8 Fahrenheit offers five base flavors: mango, green tea, Thai tea, original (milk based, neutral) and chocolate. The liquid freezes into a creamy texture, upon which the staff member chops, mushes and prods it. At this point, he adds whatever flavors you’ve asked for and spreads the base out super-thinly across the cold surface. Then, in a process that’s part performance art/part manual labor, he uses a spatula and scrapes columns of the ice cream forward, creating multiple rolls that get picked up, placed vertically in a cup and covered in your chosen toppings.
