Over the summer I read the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The book is by John Boyne and was published in January 5th, of 2006 by David Flicking Books. The recommended reading level for this book is grades 6th – 7th. It’s a very intense book, so if you’re not looking to read about sad topics I would recommend you do not read this book. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is about the Holocaust, and the families experience throughout it.  The book mainly follows Bruno, the main character. Bruno and his family begin the book by living in Berlin, Germany. But later on move to Southern Poland so Ralf, Bruno’s father, can continue his job as Commandant in the German Army. They live next to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp because Ralf needed to attend to his job as Commandant. Bruno expresses throughout the book that he does not enjoy living in Poland and wants to move back to Berlin, but his father explains that moving back to Berlin was not an option. The barbed wire fence separated the people in the concentration camp and Bruno’s family. The family, the father, mother, daughter, and son, has to figure out how to adapt to moving from one place to another. Bruno adapts by finding a friend who lives on the other side of the fence. The point of the book is to see what it was like for two young boys. It mainly focuses on Bruno whose family was working with Hitler, but it also focuses on the little boy who lives in a concentration camp. I would rate this book a 10/10. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy learning about history and prefer to read sad books.
