Recently in the news, you might have noticed all of the talks of abortion and the strict laws surrounding it. There is a debate going on as to whether abortion is “murder” to an unborn fetus. There are two main sides of the debate. The people who believe that women shouldn’t have abortions are labeled as “pro-life”. Some people who are pro-life believe that women shouldn’t get an abortion unless the woman is raped or has major health issues, or believe that you can’t get one under any circumstance. People who believe that women deserve to have the right to an abortion are labeled as “pro-choice”. Some people who are pro-choice might not fully agree with getting an abortion under some circumstances but still, believe that woman should have control of laws being made about their bodies There are already several states that have made abortion completely illegal (even if you are raped or have major health issues), they include Alabama, Missouri, Georgia, Texas, Arkansas, and Ohio. The consequences range from prison time to even the death penalty. If a woman was raped and got an abortion in a state where abortion was illegal she could face more jail time than her rapist! Most of the people making these laws are privileged, white men, who know nothing about a woman’s body. A tweet from congresswoman Alexandria Oscasio-Cortez, she states ” “6 weeks pregnant” = 2 weeks late on your period. Most of the men writing these bills don’t know the first thing about a woman’s body outside of the things they want from it. It’s relatively common for a woman to have a late period + not be pregnant. So this is a backdoor ban.” – https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1125980728976715776
In another tweet, she states “This law would force children – 12-year-olds – to carry a pregnancy by their rapist. This law would force people w/ mental disabilities to carry pregnancy by rape to term. This law forces people to be pregnant against their own consent. It’s horrifying.” – https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1128647627434811393
My Opinion:
Women should be able to make the choice about whether they’re going to have a child. It is disgusting and horrifying that anyone (privileged, white men) would force a woman to have a child. What kind of country do we live in? 1 in 4 of women have had an abortion, and that’s their business, not anyone else’s. This is a right as an American woman to be able to have an abortion. So we shouldn’t sit around and wallow about it, there needs to change. If you believe this is wrong, stand up, protest (for there were many all around the country yesterday), donate to organizations (planned parenthood, yellow bird, etc.), support candidates that want to legalize abortion rights, etc. It is fear for so many women now that they don’t have that option, they can’t control rights that are being made about their own bodies, only the government can.
