On January 21, Senator Kamala Harris of California announced she would  run for election in 2020. In 2016, she was the second African American to be elected into the U.S Senate and the first African American woman to serve as the Attorney General of California. The issues she stands for include: tax cuts for the middle class, addressing the high cost of rent, raising the minimum wage to 15 dollars, giving tuition-free higher education to the majority of Americans, reform of the cash bail system, protecting the legal rights of refugees and expanding access to affordable quality healthcare to everyone. She is a Democrat.

 

On December 31, 2018, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts announced her 2020 Presidential run. She was the keynote speaker at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and has been serving as Senator for Massachusetts since 2012. Prior to her election to the Senate she was a professor at Harvard Law She campaigns for greater income equality for the middle class, stricter banking regulations, anti-government corruption and a better environment. She is a Democrat.

On January 15, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York announced that she would be running for presidential election in 2020. Gillibrand served in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2009 before she was appointed to fill Hillary Clinton’s seat in Senate when she was appointed to Secretary of State. She is anti money and corruption in politics and is an advocate for women and equal rights. In the Senate she was the sponsor of the 9/11 Health Bill which provided financial support and medical aid to first responders and volunteers in 9/11. Prior to joining the Senate she was a corporate lawyer. She is a Democrat. 

Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States, filed for re-election on January 1. He was born in Queens, New York and he was a real-estate developer, casino owner and reality television star prior to becoming president. He made efforts to update the North American Free Trade Agreement (Or “NAFTA”). He is a strong supporter of immigration reform with his signature policy idea of a building a wall between the United States and Mexico in an effort to curb illegal immigration. He is a Republican.

Howard Schultz, an American businessman and the former chief executive of Starbucks, announced on January 27 that was preparing for a presidential run in 2020 as an Independent candidate. Schultz grew up in public housing projects in Canarsie, Brooklyn and now has amassed an estimated 3.3 billion dollar net worth. Schultz believes that the two party system is broken and wants to run to represent the interests  of the American people who he believes are not being served by either party.
