On Saturday, December 22, President Trump declared his government shutdown. As of January 15, the government shutdown has lasted 25 days. The first one was only 21 days and so this is officially the longest government shutdown in America. The shutdown is occurring because of the amount of money Trump wants to spend on the wall, and just the wall, in general, is very controversial in the different branches right now. Trump is now also threatening to declare a national emergency which means he would not need approval from the other branches and could just do it. This is affecting the government workers too. As of the shutdown, 800,000 government workers have not gotten paid, this also means they were not paid in the federal holidays they are meant to be paid on (Christmas, New Years, etc.) This is a very big topic in the news today, and it affects so many people in our country.
