We Have A New Mayor!

By Harry Kassen

On Tuesday, this city elected Bill de Blasio as the new mayor. The two candidates were Bill de Blasio, Democrat, and Joe Lhota, Republican. The candidates for the Democratic Party were Sal Albanese, Ceceilia Berkowitz, Randy Credico, Bill de Blasio, John Liu, Christine Quinn, Erick Salgado, Bill Thompson, Anthony Weiner, and Tom Allon*. The primary ended with Bill de Blasio on top, and Bill Thompson in second with enough votes to require a runoff, this was later avoided as Thompson withdrew.   The Republican candidates were John Catsimatidis, Joe Lhota, George McDonald, Adolfo Carrión, Jr., Malcolm Smith, and Tom Allon*. The primary ended with Joe Lhota as the nominee. Bill de Blasio won all five boroughs, the first time this has happened since Ed Koch, in addition, he is the first Democratic mayor since Ed Koch.
