Interviewing Lauren Manning from Girl Rising

Name: Stella

Social Justice Group: Women and Education

Date of Fieldwork: January 25, 2018

Name of Organization: Girl Rising

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Lauren Manning- Senior Manager, Communications & Community Engagement

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We went to the Girl Rising offices and talked to Lauren who has been working in social justice for a while. She talked to us about the organization and the Girl Rising movie.

What I learned:

I learned about how important it is to stay respectful to the culture. As much as Lauren and her team would love to turn everything around so girls can go to school it’s not that easy. These are the things people in these places have been taught their whole life so it’s hard to introduce something new and call it better. They can’t just disregard the customs and religion of these countries.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned a lot about the Girl Rising movie and how it has affected people. Lauren told us a story about how the movie changed the mindset of a whole town by just showing them the movie. The women weren’t educated and weren’t allowed to be educated until the movie as shown and people started thinking differently. Lauren talked about how important but hard it was to change the mindset and the fact that the whole town changed their mindset after just watching a movie is incredible. Hearing this story was very interesting and cool to hear.
