Phone Interview with Jacqueline Patterson, the head of the Environmental Justice branch of the NAACP on 1/9/17

On that day we talked to Jacqueline Patterson who is the head of the Environmental Justice branch of the NAACP. The NAACP stands for: National Association for Advancement of Colored People. This was a good association to talk to because most of the communities suffering from environmental injustice are African American ones. We took turns asking questions over the phone like: “What do you think Trump will do to help the people affected by Environmental Justice if he does anything at all?”. We also talked to her about her work and what she plans to do in the future. Jacqueline was interested in this topic from a young age when she was volunteering to help people who were affected by environmental injustice. Later on she got important people, like movie stars to be a public face to spread awareness of the injustice being done. Jacqueline also introduced us to the issues of Indian Point energy center and all the environmental hazards that it produces for us. Indian Point energy center is the main source of energy for New York City. It’s leaked water from the facility that can harm wildlife, and people, into the ground water which eventually leads to larger bodies of water. Indian Point energy center is soon to be closed down because of the several hazardous leakages that could turn the bodies of water, eventually into extremely dangerous rivers that would make it difficult and dangerous to live anywhere in the vicinity of that water. This is just one topic that she knows of.We learned a ton from talking to her, and she was very happy to talk to us.
