On Monday, November 12th my group went to a fundraiser for ITLP, the International Theatre and Literacy Project. This organization works with students in incredibly poor communities in Tanzania and South Africa. They do workshops with them to teach them playwriting. This year, the students wrote and performed a play about being heard. They had never had an experience like this. They also help the students with their English. High Schools in Tanzania are in English, so knowing English is the key to an education and a career. They also provide hot lunches and help them pay to go to school. We interviewed a few volunteers and learned about the horrible conditions that the students live in. The tuition for school costs $10 a year, and most of the families couldn’t afford it. We saw a video of a girl’s house, and it was incredibly small, dirty, and didn’t have any running water. This is the norm for these kids. We also saw some performances by Broadway stars Nick Adams and Tonya Pinkins. It was a very informative and interesting experience. We plan to interview the founder of this organization, Marianna Houston.
