Monthly Archives: December 2007

Thursday, December 20

All of the following are due Friday, December 21.

1. Turn in your Montana 1948 Journals (1-8) if you haven’t yet. If you do not turn them in before break, they will count as late.

2. Show me your winter break independent reading book (the actual book) if you haven’t yet. It counts as late if you did not show me Thursday.

And of course…

3. Bring a gift for your secret partner that costs $5 or less. Reveal your identity!

Wednesday, December 19

1. Create your final draft of your personal narrative for Thursday’s Publishing Party. There is a very specific way to format these: use “Georgia” font, 11 or 12 point, 1.5 or double spaced, .8” or 1” margins all around, 2 pages maximum. The heading should include the Title and the Author’s Name and NOTHING ELSE (not even “by” the author).

2. Bring in your winter independent reading books for a homework check.

3. Bring in a homemade gift for your secret gift exchange partner, marked with a TO but not with a FROM, and leave it on my desk Thursday morning.

4. Bring the item below for the Publishing Party, enough for about ten people.

cups: Manny and Maya PH

plates: Ella and Julian

napkins: Amy

cookies/baked goods: Hannah, Zaran, and Brianna

juice/soda: Nicholas, Jack, and Gaia

carrots/celery: Lili

fruit: Taylor

cream cheese/butter: Niles

hummus/ranch dip: Sam

crackers: Sasha

bagels: Maya P. and Calen

chips: Robbie

Tuesday, December 18

1. Prepare your 1 one-sided page of notes for the Montana 1948/Reconstruction in-class writing activity. Include the question you are answering! I strongly recommend that you make an outline so that you have a clear structure for what you want to write.

2. Continue fixing up your personal narrative. Share it with an adult or peer who you trust to give you honest feedback. Final draft is due Thursday for our Publishing Party.

3. Core A: Bring your independent reading book (the winter break one or another one).

4. Everyone: Your winter break independent reading book is due IN HAND on Thursday!

Monday, December 17

1. Bring in the sheet that states your chosen winter break independent reading book (title and author) WITH YOUR PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNATURE. If you need another copy of the sheet, click here.

2. Continue your brainstorm on your chosen Montana 1948/Reconstruction test question in preparation for Wednesday’s (not Tuesday–the day has changed) in-class writing activity/”test.” If you lost the packet with the three questions, here it is: Montana 1948 and Reconstruction Era Exam Prep. Just choose ONE to answer! DO NOT WRITE THE ESSAY IN ADVANCE. JUST MAKE NOTES AND/OR AN OUTLINE. You will be able to bring one one-sided page of notes into the computer lab on Wednesday during the “test.” If you have further questions, please email me at lsinclaire@lrei.org.

Friday, December 14

1. Montana 1948 and Reconstruction Era Exam Prep. If one of your assignments needs completing, now is your chance! Choose only one question to brainstorm for 15 minutes. We will work with your brainstorms in class on Monday. DO NOT COMPLETELY ANSWER THE QUESTION YET!

2. If you had a hard time locating LOCAL organizations that do work in the area of sustainability and could not complete the sustainability homework, try try again. Talk to family and friends and friends of family!

3. Remember that your choice of winter break independent reading book is due Tuesday Dec. 18, along with your parent’s signature. Click here for the form if you lost it or never received it.

Thursday, December 13

1. Finish Montana 1948 Journal Entry #8.

2. Gather ALL Montana 1948 Journal Entries (1-8). Fix them up if necessary. Using the original Journal Entry handouts, make sure you have ALL parts of ALL Journal Entries–you can check past blog postings for the handouts if you have lost them. Put the Journal Entries in order (1 on top, 8 on bottom) and fasten with a paper clip. This counts as a PROJECT grade.

3. Sustainability Homework. Your 3 organizations for question number 2 should not match your classmates’ organizations. Find your own!

Wednesday, December 12

1. Montana 1948 Journal Entry #7. This covers pages 101-130. There are three parts to the journal assignment: vocabulary, reading, and analysis of passages.

2. After today’s Writing Workshop, take partners’ suggestions and create new draft of personal narrative, significantly revised. Maximum length is 2 double spaced typed pages, not 3. You will need to cut out any clutter to keep it to this length! Zoom in on the MOST IMPORTANT PARTS!

Looking ahead…

1. All Montana 1948 Journals (1-8) will be due Friday 12/14. We will work on #8 in class on Thursday 12/13.

2. Your decision about your winter break independent reading book and parent’s signature will be due Tuesday 12/18. You might as well check in with Sarah or Leila now and order the book if necessary!

3. The Montana 1948 final exam will be Tuesday 12/18.

4. On Thursday 12/20, we will have a Publishing Party, so your final drafts of your personal narratives are due. You will also need to have your winter break independent reading book IN HAND.

Tuesday, December 11

Due Wednesday, December 12

1. Fix up your personal narrative a bit more. Bring THREE identical clean (no handwriting/editing on them) TYPED copies to school–ready at 8:20am. Three pages maximum length. DOUBLE SPACED. Make sure you have a title!

Due Thursday, December 13

1. Montana 1948 Journal Entry #7. This covers pages 101-130.

2. After Wednesday’s Writing Workshop, take partners’ suggestions and create new draft of personal narrative.

Monday, December 10

1. Complete Montana 1948 Journal Entry #6, keeping in mind the written conversations we had today in class. Type it up in 12 point font, double spaced, with the proper heading. BE QUIZ-READY ON PAGES 66-100!

*Note: Please make sure that you are using the updated handout for Journal Entry #6 that has FOUR parts, including a vocabulary section. There is an earlier three-part version floating around as well; disregard this version!

Friday, December 7

1. Bring your writer’s notebook home. Choose the personal narrative piece that you will “publish” at the Publishing Party on December 20. Add to it if needed. Type it up, DOUBLE SPACED. The absolute maximum page length is 3 double spaced pages (for Monday). The final version (for December 20) will have to be no longer than 2 double spaced pages. Zoom in on details! Make it enjoyable to read.

2. Bring a can for the can drive. I will count this as a homework grade.
