Resources

Through my research, I have found some valuable resources for the history of some of the sites I visited and other places in Staten Island. Some of the sites are better for discovering places, not as much the history, and some are historic site records, which give in depth history of the site and people who were involved in it.

Seaview Hospital and Farm Colony Extended History – The land of Seaview Hospital and the New York City Farm Colony is a historic district, so there is documentation of the full history. This PDF of 98 pages covers the history from the beginning to each building and its use. It includes old photos of the site and maps of the full site.

The Vanderbilt Mausoleum Extended History – This PDF is the same format as other historic site history records. It covers building plans, architects, and history of the Vanderbilts. It also includes original blueprints and photos.

Untapped Cities – Untapped Cities is a great website to discover new places in NYC. They give tours and basic information of historic sites. I would recommend doing more in depth research after finding sites on Untapped Cities. They also offer tours of NYC, such as the Abandoned Ellis Island Hospital Hard Hat Tour and subway art tours.

Forgotten NY – Forgotten NY is similar to Untapped Cities in that it provides basic information and site history.

“Cropsey” Documentary – This documentary covers the “legend” of Cropsey at the Seaview Hospital and Farm Colony. It is a very quick and interesting watch to learn more about paranoia and panic in NYC
