Tuesday, April 6

1. FDR– Due Wednesday: read chapters 1 and 2 and start to get to know FDR. Be sure you are able to discuss the chapters and share your impressions of him.

2. NOTE NEW DUE DATES:

Poetry Memorization: Start memorizing 10-15 lines of poetry that you love. This will be performed in front of the class EITHER THURSDAY, April 8 OR MONDAY, April 12. You may select the day you go on. Remember to work on emphasis, eye contact, and practice in front of another person/people or the mirror!

3. SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT: Your 5th and final visit is due this Friday, along with 5 blog posts!

Be SURE you have 4 posts and have arranged your next visit if you did not already.  Speak with me asap if you must extend the deadline past Friday.

Monday, April 5

Welcome back! It was great to see you all (Ivo, we missed you!).

1. Poetry Collection “Quiz” tomorrow–This will be open book. Make sure you are familiar with the book to do well.

Spring Break 2010 Assignment, one more time! Hope you are all well! See you Monday!

POETRY:

1. Reading: Over the break, read your poetry collection. This must be completed by Monday, April 5  – the first day back from break.
NOTES:
*You must bring your book to school with you on 4/5/10.
*You will be asked to show that you have read the book by completing an in-class assignment on the book.
*This collection will count as one of your 25 independent reading books!

2. Begin Memorizing: Start memorizing 10-15 lines of poetry that you love. This will be performed in front of the class on Friday, 4/9/10, the first Friday after we return.  You may perform a longer one if you wish.

SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT:If you are behind on the Social Justice Project, consider using some of Spring Break to catch up. You should have completed FOUR social justice visits and have completed four posts to the Social Justice Blog by the day we return from break, 4/5/10.

INDEPENDENT READING: If you are behind on reading 25 books, this is a great opportunity to catch up on that as well. Enjoy your reading adventures!

Friday, March 12

Due Monday:
Complete your Social Justice Paper, utilizing the assignment page, the writing tips sheet (both posted on earlier dates on this blog) and including a Works Cited List.  Here is the format for it, in case you need it again:  Works Cited List

Be sure to include the draft I wrote comments on when you turn it in.

  1. Your Social Justice PSA!
  2. Your three found poems based upon our neighborhood walk last Wednesday.

Wednesday, March 10

Due Tomorrow:

  • Continue writing and finalizing your Social Justice Paper! (Due Monday, with your interview woven in!)
  • Continue planning and drafting your PSA! (Due Wednesday! )
  • Also due Wednesday: Compose 3 Found Poems composed of words from our neighborhood walk!
  • NOTE: By the end of Spring Break, you should have a minimum of 4 Social Justice visits and  4 Blog Posts completed.

1. Social Justice Research: Use our lesson today to get another article on your topic–or many more articles! (Go to library.lrei.org, click Charlton, click Opposing View, and use the password you can get from your classmates if you forgot to access the data base to find a third article for your social justice topic).

2. Social Justice Paper Drafting: Using my feedback and guidelines on handout, revise paragraphs 1 & 2, and write paragraph 3. Investigative paper tips

3. Social Justice Interview: ARRANGE TO COMPLETE YOUR INTERVIEW BY this FRIDAY.

4. Social Justice Blog: Minimum 3 Social Justice Visits and 3 Blog Posts–spell checked and EDITED (Taliana!)

Due Wednesday, 3/10: 3 snapshot poems, avoiding cliche’, and that SHOW don’t Tell! One should be about someone we all know (and you should be able to show it to that person!)

Welcome to March!

If you were absent, we started looking at Women and Labor in the Progressive Era with a Webquest on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.  You should complete it  for HW: TriangleFactoryFireWebquest

Due Tuesday: Complete the webquest  on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire (posted above).

Due Wednesday: 3 poems, typed, based on Writing Workshop: 1. A Garbage Poem with specific details 2. A “Diamond in the Rough” poem with a striking contrast 3. an “unbeautiful” poem about something unpleasant using at least 8 similes and metaphors

Due Thursday: Complete the modern piece on Women and Labor by reading the excerpt from Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America, pages 69-106, by Barbara Ehrenreich.  Complete the questions posted here: Nickel&Dimed
