Launch: The Gilded Age to The Progressive Era
The Gilded Age: 1870’s-1900 & The Progressive Era: 1900-1920’s-ish

Respond to the following questions, using only a dictionary, not an internet search engine or source such as Wikipedia. The point is not to do research, but to make predictions based on the names of historical eras.

1.    Look up the word “gilded” and paraphrase the dictionary definition in your own words here:

2.    Based on the definition of the word “gilded,” what might you guess gives the Gilded Age its name? (Do NOT look it up—make a prediction!) What do you predict this time in history is known for?
3.    Look up the word “baron” and paraphrase the dictionary definition in your own words here:  (Use the definition that has to do with industrialization, business, and finance.)

4.    The so-called “Robber Barons” were a part of the Gilded Age.  What can you predict gave them their name? Take a guess!

5.    The “Progressive Era” came about in response to the Gilded Age.  What does the word “progressive” mean to you?  If you look it up, be sure to paraphrase the definition in your own words.

6.    What can you predict or conjecture (make an educated guess) the Progressive Era is going to be about based on everything you have written thus far on his handout?

End.
