Part I. Writing From Another Perspective: Marie’s Voice

In Montana 1948 the information we receive is filtered through the perspective of our narrator, the young David Hayden. Every character we meet (Gail, Wes, Marie, Uncle Frank, Grandpa Hayden, etc.) is introduced to us through David’s eyes. We hear several of these characters speak as David retells us the dialogue he has overheard. In addition, David tells us about Marie Little Soldier. His love for her is apparent, but in contrast to the other characters, we don’t hear much of anything from Marie through dialogue or in her voice. Why do you think the author might have done this?

Your task is to write 3-4 paragraphs in Marie’s perspective. The format is up to you: prose, journal entry, dialogue, or something else. How would she tell this story? Are there things that she has seen that David is unable or unwilling to let us in on? What would she say about the moments that David wasn’t present (like when Uncle Frank goes into the room alone to examine her)? What are her perceptions of the Hayden family and the town of Bentrock in general? What are her hopes and dreams? What is significant to her that we might not hear about otherwise? What is her life on the reservation like?

Part II.  Reading
Read pages 82-100.

Part III. Marie’s Reflection On Recent Events

After completing the reading write a final paragraph reflecting on the events that have occurred in this section of reading (in Marie’s voice as she would have told it).
