Below is the beginning of an imaginary play (by Pam) in order to show correct formatting for Macbeth plays.

Mr. Smith – The lawyer for the defense

Ms. Brown – The lawyer for the prosecution

Macbeth – The defendant

Malcolm – The king of Scotland, a witness for the prosecution

Hecate – The queen of the witches, a witness for the defense

Fleance – Son of the murdered Banquo, a witness for the prosecution

Macduff – A Scottish noble, a witness for the prosecution

A Gentlewoman – Worked for Lady Macbeth, a witness for the prosecution

The Doctor – Worked in Macbeth’s castle as his private doctor, a witness for the defense.

Time – Medieval Scotland

Place – A courtroom

On stage is a traditional courtroom, with a judge’s bench in the middle and two witness boxes on either side. On stage right, there is a table with two chairs for the defense and on stage left, there is a table with two chairs for the prosecution.

Scene 1

Lights up on Macbeth, alone on stage, sitting in one of the chairs at the table for the defense. Macbeth wears a grey suit and looks haggard.

MACBETH: Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. (Puts his head in hands.) I don’t want to rot away in jail!

Mr. Smith the lawyer enters.

MR. SMITH: (smiling) Cheer up, Mac!
