LREI Class 2019

Congratulations to the Class of 2019!  We are proud of your college acceptances and your final choices.  We are proud of all that you have accomplished in high school. Well done!

Parents, Come and hear from a panel of seniors and from our superstar college guidance team, Carey Socol & Kellen Howell, on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 8:45a.m. in the Sixth Ave. Cafeteria. (This event is not part of the guidance process for high school families.)

The outcomes we celebrate are the culmination of four years of hard work and of a thorough process. You can read descriptions of each step in LREI’s college guidance process at LREI.org, beginning with parent meetings in tenth grade and ending in the spring of the senior year with the last few conversations, final choices, and lots of high-fives and hugs.

One element of a successful “college process” is each individual student’s reflection on their interests, on hopes and goals, and on what they need in order to feel challenged and to grow.  In short, they have to know themselves, or at least who they are now and where they hope to be headed. Through daily interactions with their teachers and experiences such as leading their own family conferences, which begins in fifth grade and continues through twelfth, our students reflect on their successes, and challenges throughout their time at LREI.  We know similar conversations go on throughout the Lower School, as well. This understanding of self is hugely important in making the best college choice.

This understanding of needs and goals, obstacles and opportunities, helps students navigate the interplay between finding the best school for the individual student while managing the external drumbeat suggesting schools that some consider being “the best” as defined through means exterior to the student’s educational experience. We feel it is important to keep one’s focus on the right school for each individual young adult, though the constant chorus of which schools are the best, which schools are most desirable, can be hard to ignore.  This balance, the best for the individual and the best according to outside standards, has been, as we all know, a part of the national conversation these past few months.  College and university reputations are established through the institution’s successes and through factors that might be less indicative of the match between student and school.  Through truly knowing themselves and by focusing on those descriptors we know to be true, our students can make the best choices for themselves, creating a list of safety schools, target schools, and reach schools that are both practical and aspirational.

Thank you to Carey and Kellen for their work with the students and families and to the high school teachers for their indispensable roles in this journey.  A student’s hard work throughout high school, a supportive and challenging college process that builds in intensity as the students’ focus turns outward, and the honest and aspirational participation of each student leads to the amazing college matriculation list that we share today.
