Dear LREI Community,
As we head off for a well-deserved four-day weekend, a quick peek into today @ LREI. The day began with buddy groups gathering for a variety of activities — so fun and so good for younger and older buddies alike. The divisions spent the rest of the morning in grade-level groups or as a whole, all three divisions having an assembly at some point and celebrating with that division’s particular traditions. Ask your children about these. No talk of travel and traffic, of cranky relatives, or of dry turkey, while fun and light-hearted, today was for thinking about how much we have to be thankful for and to reflect, evermore deeply, on how we can ease the burdens of those who shoulder more than their fair share. You should be proud of your children, they are wonderful!
At the middle school and high school assemblies, I gave the students two assignments. You are welcome to complete them as well.
- If there is some person for whom you are grateful, to whom you owe thanks, that you love, tell them. Not in a text or an email but face to face or maybe in a handwritten letter. I suggested the students accomplish this by Monday.
- If there is something in your life for which you are grateful – food, shelter, love, safety, etc. – and that others might not have enough of, work to provide this commodity to them. For this assignment, I have given the students until next Thanksgiving.
Thank you, families, for entrusting your children to LREI. Thank you for all that you do to support our work and for all of the ways that your involvement in the community strengthens our commitment to progressive education and to equity.
Finally, families, please join me in thanking the faculty and staff for their tireless efforts on behalf of our students. There is magic within these walls, or at least so it seems. Though, truly, there is talent, expertise, and plain hard work.
I wish you all the best for a wonderful Thanksgiving,
