Dear LREI Families,
This is the last Thursday push page for the 2015-2016 school year. While I am sure we will be in touch in the coming days, this is the last of our regular, weekly communications. The students, too, like to take note of all of the lasts—last calculus class, last reading group, last PE, last meeting with buddies, last taco day. (This one made me a little sad, as well.) Over the next few days the students will finish projects, reflect on work and achievement, and say, “So long for now.”
The end of the school year is a bittersweet moment. For some students, the bitter may be the loss of structure, an end to a comforting and challenging routine, or a goodbye to good friends, at least for the time being. There can also be a little bitter in the recognition of time passing and of a waning childhood. One way to make the bitter sweeter is to share a heartfelt “Thank you” with those who offered help, support, and guidance throughout the year. I encourage all students to find the time to share these thoughts.
On the other end of the spectrum, for many, most, or even all, the summer break feels like a reward for a job well done, the sweet. It offers, for many, a variety of opportunities and experiences. (Though, not for all. Worth reading this commentary on summer “vacation.”) Summer break offers a change of pace, a chance to exercise different muscles, both literally and figuratively. I know that, for me, summer offers the privilege of a slower pace and more time; time to enjoy the City, time to read, time to learn new things, time to make the time that a task needs. I hope for your children that they have the opportunity to change their pastimes and patterns, maybe to rekindle old interests, or to find new ones. In the vein of everything old being new again, and to offer a break from screens, I encourage you to read this article from Wired Magazine about the five best toys of all time. Though tongue-in-cheek, and not always City friendly, a reminder of the inventiveness of youth and that simple can be fun. You can also take a look at the newest attraction on Governor’s Island. Terrific ways, all, for your children, and family, to spend the time you have together.
I ask all to join me in offering our congratulations to the parents of the seniors. Quite an accomplishment. We hope that you and yours enjoy the traditions that are coming your way—the prom tomorrow, the Senior Banquet on Tuesday and then, on Wednesday morning, Commencement. Such exciting times!
