Exciting News from Michael Patrick, ’71, Board Chair and Phil Kassen, Director

Dear LREI Community,

Exciting news!  When we last spoke about our Building for Action Campaign in late September, we had finished significant work over the past summer on both campuses, including renovating all middle school classrooms.  The economic climate has, of course, caused us to review our plans to be sure that we are moving forward prudently. Following significant fundraising successes throughout the fall, at the January 26th meeting of LREI’s Board of Trustees, the Board unanimously gave the green light to the next phase of Building for Action.

Here is a quick summary of what Phase II will entail. Construction will begin in March at the start of spring break and conclude this fall. We will begin by building the foundation for all future construction on the Charlton Street site as we excavate and pour a new foundation in the rear of the adjacent townhouse. Additionally, we will achieve the following important renovations:

  • The main entrance will be completely remodeled, giving the high school an enlarged lobby and inviting entry.
  • The townhouse will be renovated to provide a new admissions office, a new college guidance office, seminar-style classrooms and faculty workspace.
  • The science classroom on the second floor will be renovated, moving from a place that references our scientific past to a room that inspires our scientific future.
  • The cafeteria will be enlarged and brightened and will incorporate new student spaces.
  •  The empty lot behind the townhouse will be reinvigorated to create outdoor space for our student body.
  • An elevator will make the fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • And at Sixth Avenue, we will continue our improvements with the renovation of four of our Lower School classrooms.

As you can see from this list, Phase II work will bring very significant enhancements to the program and facilities. We also anticipate that this work will enable us to enlarge the present high school population to 200 students in September. We look forward to celebrating the “grand opening” of Phase II work next October with you.

Thank you for your interest and support.

Warm regards,

Michael Patrick ’71                                        Philip Kassen
