Celebrating Participation

Dear Families:

A thank you to those families who were able to attend The Middle School Awards this past Tuesday evening. The number of students involved in extracurricular activities and the diversity of these activities was inspiring. There is no doubt that these opportunities, which challenge students to think and learn in powerful ways, contribute in important ways to our mission of educating the whole child. As with all endeavors, these experiences are not without their own obstacles (being overmatched by an opposing team, struggling to get the harmonies just right, having to adapt materials to met a robotics challenge). However, when we see our students pushing themselves to do their best for themselves and for the team/group the opportunities for learning are self-evident.

I look forward to future evenings where we are able to come together as a community to celebrate this important work.

Of General Interest . . .
1) From Dean of Co-Curricular Programs Gabrielle Keller: Congratulations to the strong group of LREI community members and friends and family who did the Aids Walk this past Sunday. At this point, we won’t know the amount of our final team donation to the GMHC for several weeks. Please remember to collect your final pledges and gather your donations now. We can turn in our money up until June 8th. Either mail your contributions in the envelopes provided at the Walk or return the envelopes to Gabrielle.

2) From Middle School Librarian Jennifer Hubert-Swan: The 6th Ave. library will close to circulation starting Wednesday, June 1. After that date, no more books may be checked out from the library so that the librarians may start their summer inventory. But please continue to bring books back! End of the year overdue slips will be coming home the first week in June. Please encourage students to look for lost library books under beds, in closets, lockers, etc. The library itself will still be open to students, faculty and parents as a quiet space to read or do homework until the end of the year. If you have any questions about this or any other library matter, please contact MS librarian Jennifer Hubert Swan: jhubert@lrei.org

3) Attached please find a flyer for the LREI High School Seniors’ “Child Care Saturday,” to be held on Saturday 5/21 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Call ahead, and then take advantage of an afternoon out!

4) On Saturday at 7:00PM, we will have our last Coffeehouse of the year in the Charlton Street PAC. This night of instrumental music, signing and dramatic readings will have a human rights theme. All are welcome!

5) From High School Principal Tony Fisher: On Tuesday, the LREI Girls High School track team won its first ever GISAL (Girls Independent School Athletic League) championship. Aria Carlston won the 400-meter race, and the girls also won the 4x400m and 4x800m races. In addition, the team took silver medals in the 4 x 100m, 100m and 200m races, and bronze in the 200m. The girls’ total of 90 points was far ahead of the second place team’s 74 points, and actually placed the team 4th among all co-ed teams (the wining co-ed team had 141 points). Seven girls posted times in various races that qualified them for the NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools) State Championships meet next Wednesday. With eighth grader Denueve Shepherd, seven ninth graders and only a few seniors graduating, the team is poised to dominate for years to come!
