5th grade – DJM collagraph prints

Collagraph printing is a form of printmaking that uses collage materials to create a relief plate. This plate can then be inked so that the textures of the materials appear in the resulting print. Fifth graders used a variety of materials to create their plates, and were allowed a wide latitude for playing with imagery either representational or nonrepresentational. They focused mainly on the textures of the materials they had at their disposal and worked with their inks to create prints that showed them the best.

5th grade – Kemet study work

The second trimester is a longer study of ancient Kemet (Egypt) for the fifth grade. This work was made in conjunction with their humanities research and writing. These artifacts come from their own study of different roles and jobs in the ancient society. Using photographs of historical objects the students used materials at their disposal to creatively recreate the artifact both as a presentation piece and as a study of that piece. These students have chosen to present this work as part of their art show.

5th grade – Ceramics work

Early in the year the fifth graders tackled some basic ceramics skills, as well as some opportunities for more open ended and creative experimenting. They began with a skill they were familiar with, the pinch technique, though they were asked to think about it carefully by controlling the even thickness of their walls, the thickness of the foot (or base corners) of their pot and to aim for the controlled height. They then used the score ‘n slip technique and coils to increase the size of their piece. With this as a base they could then turn the work into anything they wanted by adding hand built additions.

5th grade – Single-point perspective room drawings

As part of their study of single point perspective drawing students were asked to use their introductory knowledge of the techniques to draw a room from observation. They were asked to sit at one side of a room, use a ruler to lay in the basic structure of the space and furniture, and then finish off the drawing from observation. This was a very early assignment given to assess what they could do before jumping into the much larger street drawings. Some of the students decided to submit this as one of their art show pieces.

6th grade – CJS6 Frida Kahlo inspired portraits

6th graders spent time this trimester looking at the work of the painter Frida Kahlo. Specifically they discussed how in many of her pieces she portrayed herself alongside animals, objects or imagery that gave the viewer insight into her personal identity or the topics she was thinking about or grappling with. Students used the grid technique to draw a portrait of themselves, and then added additional animals, objects or imagery of their own for the viewer to see and interpret. These portraits were then completed using materials of the individual artist’s choice.

5th grade – CJK5 Single point perspective street drawings

5th graders have been working on a collection of exercises designed to help them better understand how to use the techniques associated with single-point perspective in drawing. These exercises culminated in a drawing in which they created an original landscape of a street or a road. They were allowed to complete that drawing with color or shading as they chose
