Starting the Day:

  • Arrive by 8:15AM . You are certainly welcome to arrive earlier than 8:15AM to prepare for the day. Show your school ID at the door. This is an important equity practice; no one is an exception.
  • If you suspect that you are going to be late to school, call Nathan and/or reception as early as possible.
  • At 8:15AM, advisors are expected to begin morning meeting activities in homeroom (e.g., attendance, morning meeting, current events, organization, etc.)  If not supervising a homeroom, teachers are still expected to arrive by 8:15AM.
  • Your free time during the day is your own and you are free to leave the building.  However, teachers are generally expected to be available to the institution during non-teaching times. If you will be out for any length of time please let Nathan know before leaving the building.

Changing classes throughout the day:

  • Classes should dismiss 3 minutes before the start of the next period. This means that wrap-up activities such explanation of homework and clean up must begin several minutes before that. Please plan accordingly. If a colleague’s timing is impacting your class, you are encouraged to speak to them directly. You can also bring this up with Nathan.
  • Students should not use the time between classes to take long detours or breaks, but instead check in with the teacher of their next class before going to get water or use the bathroom. If there is a student who is frequently late, talk to them about it and speak to their advisor.
  • Students in the halls and stairwells are all teachers’ responsibility, whether they are in your class or not. Teachers in these common spaces are expected to help reinforce norms of behavior with reminding and redirecting language. If a student is making a particularly bad choice or not responding to redirection, they must be sent to Margaret or Nathan.
  • Norms for common spaces include using in indoor voice (low volume), moving with the flow of foot traffic (staying to the right), picking up anything that is dropped, using polite words like excuse me and please, giving appropriate space others by not crowding or pushing.

End of day

  • Middle school students are dismissed at 3:15. Seventh and eighth graders may sometimes be dismissed by 3:10. Do not dismiss your classes earlier than this without a prior conversation with Nathan, as this is a safety issue. Parents assume students are in our care until 3:15 unless otherwise informed.
  • All teachers are expected to be in school until 3:45PM on Mondays, and Wednesdays through Fridays. Divisional, departmental, and full faculty meetings on Tuesdays may run until 5:30PM (meetings usually end at 5:00PM). On non-meeting days, you can use the time from 3:15-3:45PM to meet with colleagues, work with students, and monitor students who you have required to stay after school. On a rotating basis, seventh and eighth grade teachers will proctor Seventh/Eighth Grade Study Group.
  • Please inform Nathan if you need to leave prior to 3:45PM.
  • Students in the building after 3:15PM must be under the supervision of a teacher in a club or activity. Otherwise, it is important to direct them to the lobby where they  can self-dismiss or wait for pick up.
