Homework Policy
Please read the “Homework” section in the Middle School Student and Family Handbook for additional information.
As a supplement to the information in the Student and Family Handbook, please keep the following in mind:
- Per our general policy for extended breaks, it is fine to assign independent reading and the equivalent of a single night’s assignment. If you are planning on assigning something more substantial, please see Nathan before you do so.
- Students should understand that effort means trying their best in terms of content and presentation, and assignments will be evaluated according to the standards that are discussed in class. Students who turn in incomplete assignments subsequent to a discussion of what a complete assignment should look like, should be considered not to have completed the assignment. Where/when appropriate, students are expected to complete incomplete assignments until they meet expectations.
- A student who is absent is responsible for assignments unless otherwise specified by the teacher.
- We have created the following set of steps to address late and incomplete homework:
-
- Each time a student fails to complete a homework assignment, the teacher will discuss the matter with the student and will set a deadline, if applicable, for when the assignment must be completed. The teacher will complete a “Homework Notification” note on LREI Connect. A notification must never be sent to a family in lieu of a conversation with the student. Notifications must also be sent out in a timely fashion so that families can respond appropriately to make sure that the work is completed. The student’s advisor should discuss the situation with the student. Advisors are encouraged to develop a system to keep track of notification sent out for any of their advisees.
- Students are required to complete all missed work in a timely fashion (please see the “Study Group” section for more specific information regarding late/incomplete homework completion for seventh and eighth graders). There may, however, be some assignments that are not eligible for make-up or credit. If the assignment can be made up, the student must do so by the due date established by the teacher. The made-up work may not receive full credit.
- A third missed assignment during the same trimester, in any class, will result in the student being required to meet with the Assistant Principal. The Assistant Principal will contact the student’s family. The advisor may attend this and all subsequent meetings.
- A fourth missed assignment during the same trimester, in any class, for fifth and sixth graders will result in the student being required to attend Study Group after school for the remainder of the trimester. The Assistant Principal will contact the family to let them know about this requirement.
- If a fifth assignment is missed, the Assistant Principal will meet with the student and may decide to arrange a family conference. Nathan may choose to attend this meeting.
- If a sixth assignment is missed, the Assistant Principals will arrange a family conference. Nathan will attend this conference.
