Please work on your practice set.
Have a great day off!
I will see you on Wednesday.
Today we continued to multiply fractions. Some of us are struggling to simplify fractions before we complete the problem. If this applies to you, really focus on looking for common factors. Try to find the simplest form before you multiply the fractions.

Practice Set due Friday
Today in class we reviewed adding and subtracting fractions when used to solve a word problem. We also reviewed fractional parts of a rectangular shape. I introduced the idea of multiplying fractions…we will continue this as the week moves forward.
I announced that there would be an assessment on Friday and I distributed a study guide. Please refer to the information on the assessment page in this blog.

6th Grade Math Assessment
Friday, September 19, 2008
This assessment will help you and I know whether you understand how to add and subtract fractions and solve word problems that are answered by adding and/or subtracting fractions.
In order to study you should review…
• The algorithm for adding fractions
• The algorithm for subtracting problems
• Word problems that ask you to add and subtract fractions
• Simplifying fractions (because your answer must be in its simplest form)
Look over your notes and review the homework you have completed.
Some examples from the book you might want to review are…
• page 25: 2-17
• page 26: 20-26 and 30-35
• there are also several groups of problem on page 23 you can use to practice
If you need some extra help you can come before school or during IWP.
We will have some review problems in class each day this week as well. You can record them in your math notebook and then you can use them to study at home.
You will get a grade on this assessment. The grade will help us know if you need more practice time. If we find that you need more time to practice adding and subtracting fractions we will arrange some time to work together.
There is a one-hour time limit to complete the problems but you may ask for extra time if you do not finish. You will be given the choice of completing the work during recess on Friday or before school Monday (7:20-8:10).
I am so sorry I was not able to be with you today. I am sure you were great with the substitute and completed the tasks I left for you.
You will get a new practice set on Monday. Remember that the practice set is for you to review the skills you have learned in the past. The idea is for you to use whatever strategy works for you to solve the problems in the set, there is no need for you to solve problems using more than one strategy. I ask you to attach the work you did so I can look at it to make sure you are on the right track.
