The LREI varsity volleyball team has continued to beat competitors around the city. From fierce wins at home against York Prep to a great away game against Dwight, one thing the varsity volleyball team has not done is lost. The team is connected, passionate, and works hard at every game. The volleyball team has always been good, but an impressive start to the season isn’t a coincidence. India Iacono (11th) stated that “a lot of other teams lost their seniors who were pretty good on the court, while our team has had a consistent amount of good players each year.” A perfect blend of situations has led the team to smooth wins, and a devoted team has supported the success. Jolie Landau said, “We have a different coach this year that likes to play a tight team.” Claire Flemming said, “We have good hitters, setters, bumpers, and all the other stuff a volleyball team should have.” The volleyball team has talented players in each position, and it’s the combination that makes them good.
Anna Gonzales, who is working hard to manage ins and outs of LREI sports has made it a point to shout out players every Friday, and with the volleyball team’s success, you start to realize the effort that the players are bringing to the games. Player Jade Young stated, “Grace Macgillivray is a very consistent setter and we have very good hitters, so it makes it easier for us to get to the ball. We also try to set goals as a team to improve our gameplay. We also have a lot of people who are able to switch between positions when necessary and we are a very flexible team.” A perfect storm of success has led this team to victory, and moments like these fuel the school spirit.
Many students and faculty have shown up to home games at Thompson St. Gym to show their support. Games usually take around an hour and a half to two and a half hours and are a great way to get involved in school spirit and support the hard work the players are putting into each game. Games will be announced at the beginning of the week so try to be there, even if you just stop by. Go Knights!
