Description of the Project:
In this project, I will be exploring the theory of the “Lolita Effect” and how to combat it. To do this, I intend to read the book, Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov and do further research and analysis through studying articles, book reviews, op-eds, etc., based on the book. I believe that this subject isn’t addressed or discussed enough. Especially as a sixteen-year-old girl, I can resonate with the issue of sexualization and exploitation of women and girls. Because the problem isn’t concerned about adequately, some deem it as “common” because of how normalized it is. By reading and analyzing the book, I hope to identify the stereotypes and myths that integrate together to curate mass media trends, undermining young women and girl’s self-confidence. Primarily, I strive to establish which of those aspects condone female objectification. I hope to learn more about how to combat this issue and how to reverse the normalization of how young girls and women are treated in today’s society.
