Ava and I sketched out a very rough plan of what we will be basing the panels on. On the bottom right thumbnail is a depiction of the manifest destiny painting. It is from a different perspective as it is within the cart but it shows the famous woman who is usually floating to be sitting across from a group of chained Native Americans. Sitting next to her are soldiers. There is no interaction between the woman and the others as if she isn’t there altogether. The top left thumbnail is a subway cart that is like any other but there is a modern-day depiction of the woman. She is hidden in plain sight just like the systemic racism that affects marginalized communities, especially Native Americans.

This is the underpainting of one of the two works in our project. It was done in acrylic paint, but the finished painting will be done with oil on top. The layout is mostly symmetrical, with the carriage’s back opening out onto the landscape. This painting is the depiction of American Progress from a different perspective, while the other will be the modern-day interpretation that takes place in the subway.
