Description of the Project: Through this pandemic, everyone is wearing masks which makes it harder to read someone by their facial expressions. However, I’ve noticed that I’ve been paying more attention to what I wear and how my mood reflects on what I end up wearing. By living in New York City, I want to pay more attention to what the strangers I see walking around are wearing with the added face mask look. My idea came to life by taking my camera around the city with me during my day to day life. I asked a few questions to the people whom I captured photos of, so that I was able get their opinions how their style has been affected during COVID. As I picked the top photos to show for my project, I thought about who expressed themselves the most through their outfits. I have created a photo album of the collection of the images to share with my school for anyone who is interested!
Final Product (e.g., documents, images, video, audio, poster, display, etc.)
Final Reflection on Learning:
Throughout my experience creating my honors project, I have developed many realizations while focusing on one topic. Most people before the pandemic payed less attention to what they put on everyday, going to work, school, or even just staying at home. As we went into the quarantine, we all stayed in more comfy clothes, for example I noticed many people wore sweats, sweatshirts, and pajamas because people were confined to their homes. However now that we are out of quarantine, I’ve noticed that after speaking to family members, friends, or even seeing strangers on the street people express themselves throughout their clothing.
Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3:
Within the first week, I began walking around New York City capturing photos of strangers on the streets and their outfits. As I started paying attention, I noticed that I would be unable to gather information by just looking at their clothes. I decided to ask a few questions to the pedestrians who were available to talk, and after that I realized how much more I was learning from their responses. Some examples of questions I had asked, “How do you think the pandemic affected your clothing sense?”, “Do you feel as if your outfit represents your mood depending on the day?”, and “Since we wear masks everyday, do you feel as if its easier or harder to express yourself?”. By taking note of their feedback, I was able to grasp a better understanding on what they were thinking as they got dressed everyday. Here are a few of the common responses, “I feel more confident with what I am wearing when I wear a mask”, “I usually get lazy because I don’t think anyone will recognize me because of my mask” and “I would say I am a lot more interested in fashion and what the trends are because of the pandemic”. Overall, I realized the comparison of before and after the pandemic. In the year 2019 most people wore sweats and lounge wear. However, now coming out of the quarantine they want to take advantage of leaving their home and dress up more.
Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6:
During weeks 4-6, I continued to take photos of peoples outfits on the street however I felt as if I had enough information to start creating the look book. I took the pedestrians responses and aligned it to the images I chose to show. While observing the photos, I realized how many different types of outfits and styles were being worn. I had never payed attention to what other people were wearing on the streets of NYC. then started to plan and prepare for my final product of the project, I thought about how I could demonstrate my collection of images as best as possible. I began with a trying to think of a format so that I can I could turn these photos into something a bit more creative. Within the two weeks, I completed my poster as well.
Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9:
In the final weeks of creating my project, I edited my poster to make sure it represented what I have been working on in the past couple of weeks. I then started to finish my look book, so I began picking my top photos that I wanted to include. As you look at the final product, you can see the photos pasted into polaroids, I specifically chose the photos that reflection an action shot. This look book represents the outfits that people wear on a day to day basis and how they have felt the pandemic has affected their styles.
