Project by: Ruby Hutchins (11th Grade)
Project Advisor: Peter Heinz
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Preethi Thomas Mcknight

Description of the Project: I’m developing different ways to help both basketball players and other students who aren’t necessarily athletes. I’ll do a lot of research to figure out different workouts for both basketball players and the other students. I also want to learn more about workouts and stretches and how certain athletes should focus on specific muscles based on what their sport is. Towards the end of the trimester, I’m going to focus on the varsity basketball team in particular and figure out what types of workouts would improve their game, and then ultimately create a workout for all of the members of the team.

Final Product (e.g., documents, images, video, audio, poster, display, etc.):

There are a couple final products that I will finish and they are accessible to the student body. I’ve made a couple presentations so far on workouts/exercises that people can still do in quarantine, and separate presentation on basketball workouts you can do in NYC apartments. I have also made a month-long workout for people on the varsity basketball team, and we’re going to have optional meetings throughout the summer where we will use those workouts.

Final Reflection on Learning:

I have done a lot of researching work to figure out the best workouts for basketball players to do in NYC homes, and I found videos that I put in a presentation and in google classroom for people to see on the Y-Block page. I also worked on finding the best workouts for different muscle groups, and ones that improved different qualities. I also designed a workout specifically for female basketball players who are 14-17 years old. I created a month-long workout plan that I shared with my coaches and soon will share with my teammates, and we’ll have optional meetings twice a week throughout the summer in which we do workouts (including the ones I have put together), all together.

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant):

So far on this project, I have done a lot of researching work to figure out the best workouts for basketball players to do in NYC homes, and I found videos to up in a presentation ad I put them in google classroom for people to see on the Y-Block page. I also worked on finding the best workouts for different muscle groups, and ones that improved different qualities. I have also started to work on a plan to individually improve members of the basketball team tailored to them to improve their weaknesses. I’ll start with myself so I can figure out what workouts help improve different weaknesses and then work from there to help other players on the basketball team improve their game.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant):

For the past few weeks I have been working on the personalized workouts for the basketball team, I have learned a lot from Peter and done research based on his suggestions about specific workouts for specific muscle groups. I did research on the muscle groups that workouts I and generally people who play basketball do, and I split them all up based on what they’re improving, and doing to help you get better at the sport. I have also started using Sportsyou which is a platform that could potentially be used to help middle school and high school athletes ask questions and receive workouts to help them get better in their sport. I uploaded a workout on the presentation I previously made that has different basketball workouts, and I uploaded a weekly schedule of how many/how long you should do each workout.

Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9 (include any photos or video if relevant):

For these last couple of weeks, I have been working on focusing on the varsity girls basketball team and what kind of workouts would benefit them the most. I also learned a lot about how gender, age, sport, and level of skill/training really influences what workouts will help you improve. I didn’t realize there were so many different parameters I had to include in my research to find workouts and exercises. I first looked at individuals on my team and what each person needs to work on the most. I then used an article Peter gave me to figure out what type of categories of workouts I needed to include and then from there I found videos for each. I created three days of workouts that can be repeated for about two to three weeks before increasing the frequency, type of workout, or volume of the workout. This is a great basis for starting to workout with the team over the summer and I learned so much when putting it together.
