Project by: Anna Faulkner (11th Grade)
Project Advisor: Kelly O’Shea
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Peter Hienz

I began learning on one track of lesson plans but about halfway through I came to the conclusion that it was moving too fast for me and I wasn’t quite sure what was going on. At this point I shifted to a new course that moved at a pace I felt more comfortable with. This posed a large setback in my process and I needed to work much faster in the second half so I could complete my goals by the end of the trimester.

With each meeting and between each meeting I worked on new activities that built my knowledge of physics and coding.

Below are examples of some of the work I’ve done.

This honors project challenged me in many ways. Coding is always challenging because it is very clear when you get something wrong but often times it is hard to figure out what is wrong within all of your code. Another thing that proved very challenging for me was using physics in coding.

I quickly realized that my background knowledge about physics was very weak and I was incapable of following along in the course that assumed you already knew physics. Animating the objects was a crucial element of what I was working on but was only possible if you were aware of the physics equations and how to use them.

I found this project very interesting and insightful. I hope to continue learning about this topic through the Computational Modeling class being offered next year.

Project Proposal

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

I will be learning the basics of the python coding. I started learning a bit of coding in my honors project last trimester and would like to move forward with that by learning a more complex coding language.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

Critical thinking and creativity are very important elements of coding. Critical thinking is necessary for learning how to build code and what steps to take in your code. Creativity comes into play when deciding what to code.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

I plan to present what I learn in a poster of learning.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

I will be using Python to do math and physics related coding.

When do you plan on meeting?
Monday mornings and one Xblock a week.
