Description of the Project: For this honors project, I’m creating basketball workout videos that will be accessible on the City’s Instagram page for middle school girls to watch and eventually use to do their own workouts. I’ll film and edit a new video every 1-2 weeks and have it posted to the AAU team’s Instagram soon after so it is accessible to everyone who wants to use it in their own at-home workouts.

Final Reflection on Learning: Working on this honors project has helped me learn a lot about how to create and share workout videos, how to edit and make them easy to understand, how to make sure people are able to follow along, and how to teach different basketball skills. I’m really glad I was able to experiment with the types of videos I would share, which let me do simple dribbling workouts, complex dribbling moves, videos that focused on one specific move, layup videos, and form shooting videos. When I reflect on the work I have done on this project this trimester, I’m proud that I was able to find a way to somewhat coach people since I usually coach middle school basketball players in person around this time of the year. I love being able to demonstrate drills, and talk about what skills each workout is helping them get better at. I also just really love playing basketball and I haven’t been able to play with people since last March, so being able to know that someone out there is using my workout video to get better is a really good feeling. I think I might continue this project over winter break and possibly even next trimester since I have a lot of ideas for more workout videos, and I would love to continue to create these videos even after this trimester ends.

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant): For these first three weeks, I have made 4 workout videos, all of which are different in terms of skill level, and type of drills. They have all been posted on the City’s Instagram account and many people have watched them so far and hopefully have been able to use them to safely social distance while practicing basketball dribbling drills. For every video, I have put subtitles for all the different drills/types of dribbles, and I have also included audio recordings for each one of the videos. Those audio clips not only explain the type of dribbles/drills they’re going to be doing but also provide good reminders while doing these drills including; keeping your eyes up, knees bent, off-hand up protecting against defenders, how high the dribbles should be compared to your body, etc. So far I have loved working on the workout videos, and they have pushed me to work on different types of dribbling drills, as well as help me learn even more about how to successfully edit and create workout videos.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant): In these past 3 weeks, I have continued to make the workout videos, but I have shifted from dribbling workouts to shooting workouts. These were a little bit harder to both film, and plan a workout routine than the dribbling workouts were for me, but I think the end result for my first shooting video was really great! It was just posted on The City’s Instagram page, and I think that it will be really helpful for middle school basketball players if they do have a hoop accessible to them since it’s good to not just work on different muscles and a different type of workout will really help them do that. I have also begun thinking about my plan for the type of videos I want to make going forward, and I definitely think shooting videos, along with shooting off the dribble and incorporating dribble moves into jump shots/layups would be really good for middle school players to work on.

Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9 (include any photos or video if relevant): During these last few weeks of the trimester, I have focused on making different kinds of videos that work on different skills, and are hopefully more engaging, compared with the shorter dribbling workout videos. At this point, I have done a couple shooting videos which have allowed me to incorporate different dribble moves, layups, and jump shots into each video. I think the voice over and the subtitles are helpful for people to understand what I’m doing, and also allows them the option to follow along with me as they watch the video of me doing the drill at the same time.
