Cole:
While COVID-19 presented certain recording difficulties and more work for us, Aidhan and I continued on, determined to complete this project. We both have such an appreciation for Chinese culture and the Mandarin language and were inspired to take our speaking and conversation skills to the next level. Not only did this project improve our conversational skills but it also improved our writing skills. We wanted to write a general script outline for each episode and then also encourage us to improvise while recording as well, this way we could improve both of those areas. I can say now that I feel 100% more confident and comfortable speaking Mandarin on the spot. I think one of the biggest takeaways for this project has been my realization of the importance of just speaking the language. Aidhan and I would try to talk in Mandarin on the phone in preparation for the project and while it was difficult, it ultimately improved our conversation skills. I would strongly encourage anyone wanting to improve their Mandarin or language skills to find a partner and just have daily conversations with them. I am very proud of this project and hope to continue speaking Mandarin with Aidhan in the future!
Aidhan: Cole and I have been learning Mandarin together since the 5th grade. Every class we push each other to learn new words or phrases because both of us want to be fluent in Mandarin. This project acted as a “test” for us, to see how much of the mandarin we have learned we could actually use in a conversation. This project allowed us to speak with each other on topics that we would discuss in English. We wanted the conversation to be as fluid and normal as possible. Cole and I occasionally talk in Mandarin on the phone, and sometimes even text in Mandarin. This project gave us a standing point, it showed us how far we have learned throughout these 7 years of learning Mandarin, but it also showed us that we still have a lot more learning to do.

Here are Cole and my mandarin podcast #1 script. The topic is on our high school lives and how we are preparing for college. We wanted to discuss this because we were both fairly stressed at the time, and we wanted to make it so that we could express our emotions not just in English, but in mandarin.
Cole：哇 ，你好听众，我的名字是杜可
Aidhan: 我的名字是艾爱得
