Project by: Molly Voit (12th Grade)
Project Advisor: Shauna Finn
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Jacqueline Baker

Description of the Project:

Through this project, I hoped to learn how to wheel-throw in 3D art. I took one trimester of 3D last year, but have chosen to spend my other courses in Studio Art. This project allowed me to learn new skills in 3D art while also learning in Studio. I have always been fascinated by wheel throwing, so I wanted to spend time practicing it and learning how to do it myself.

Final Product (e.g., documents, images, video, audio, poster, display, etc.):

Final Reflection on Learning:

Reflecting on this project as a whole, I think that I have both come a long way from the beginning and have a lot to learn. I really only have the basics down on how to wheel throw but think that having this foundation will allow to go forward and keep practicing independently. I think doing this project also increased my comfort with being uncomfortable and being a beginner at something. I experienced going from never having produced something on the wheel to someone who at least knows how to begin and knows what to improve, which I think is significant.

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant):

I’ve spent the past three weeks learning the methods of wheel throwing and watching videos online. I both worked with Shauna’s demonstrations and used videos from the Clay Lady and learnclay. I feel prepared to begin practicing on my own.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant):

I have begun working on my own pieces independently. I am still struggling with keeping the piece centered on the wheel while raising the walls and working with other aspects of the clay, but am confident with more practice, I will get better.

Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9 (include any photos or video if relevant):

As I am getting closer to the end of the project, I’ve started saving more of the pieces I make on the wheel. I am also still learning new methods and techniques to help me be more successful in what I produce. I also feel more comfortable with what I do know and feel like I have a routine going for me when I sit down at the wheel. I still have to work on making different shaped pieces and keeping the walls even all around.
