Project by: Eve van Rens (12th Grade)
Faculty Advisor: James French
Over the Course of the Trimester I have been working with James on learning new techniques and developing my craftsmanship in printmaking. We meet once a week to discuss my assignment, and I’ll share my sketches and ideas with him, and then go home to work on my block(s). The next week we’ll meet again, I’ll make some prints, and we’ll discuss my product.
This trimester I produced several prints: some were focused on mark making, some on preserving darkness, and others were multi-block prints.
Some of my sketches:
First I do a sketch in pencil, figuring out the value, and then I’ll reduce it to a line drawing in charcoal which I can transfer onto tracing paper.

Some Final Products:
I’ve learned a lot this trimester, and hope to continue this honors project. I’d like to learn etching, which is a very different approach to printmaking, and possible do some mono printing.
PROPOSAL
Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?
I want to explore both relief and intaglio printmaking in this honors project. I’ve done some block printing, but have never tried etching before, so I’m particularly looking forward to that. My studio art class time is taken up by painting and portfolio prep so it would be nice to have an extra time to explore something different that I have interest in.
What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project?
I would like to produce at least a couple complete prints that I could display and potentially put in my portfolio.
Hi Eve,
thanks for your work on this project. I appreciate the way you lay out the pictures so we can see your process.
I’d love to hear more about what you learned about this process, and yourself as an artist.
Thanks,
Micah
