My Name: Giovanni Buffon

My Story: I am 15 years old and my dad was a master stonemason. When I was 10 he died of the plague and my brothers became the heads of the stonemason community. Right before my dad died he gave me his lucky carving knife. He said if you work hard anything can happen and just like that he passed away. From that point on, I worked my hardest to become the best stone carver I could be. Then one day my mom and my three brothers started showing symptoms. My mom told me escape from this horrible disease and leave. Then the lord brought a strand of good luck, I was recruited to the crusades to build castles. I traveled from Italy to Syria with my comrades killing thousands of Innocent Muslims. One day I was thinking, if my religion is about peace and being true to God why are we going out and killing innocent people. That night I planned to run away to a nearby Syrian village and convert to Islam. That night I left in the dead of night and came wandered into the village. Immediately I went to the mosque and asked to convert. First I had to say the Shadada which in English translated is There is no God but Allah and Mohamed is his prophet. The next day I went out to find a job. As it turned out a mosque was being built close by and needed a stone mason to build the pillars. I went and showed them my skills and I got the job. It didn’t pay much but it was enough to keep a roof over my head and food on my table.

(In the space below, describe the story of how you came to the guild and your specific area of work focus):

Stone carver, I build the pillars in mosques.

My Job: Stonemason

(In the space below, describe the specific kind of work that you do)
I am a Stonemason and they are important I build the foundation for mosques. It’s important because without stonemasons there isn’t any support for the mosque.
(add your response here)

(Add a couple of pictures that show the kind of work you do)

To do this work, I use the following kinds of tools:

Chisels, hammers and bush hammers to finish the stone.

Some other related and interesting facts about building cities, castles, churches and/or mosques that I plan to share with visitors to our guild: That not a lot of stone carvers made mosques because the intricate design is tile.

Notes from stone carving tools

In stone carving there were lots of different tools used for different stuff. some hammers for carving were tempered differently for different types of stone.

Quarrying pick used to cut out the stone.

Bush hammer used for finishing stone but not used on marble.

point chisels take off a lot of stone.

stone blocks can be produced at about 4 a day while designs that have more complexity can be produced every four days.

Islamic City Notes

Each neighborhood is self sufficient with a well and a place to bake bread a mosque a place for children to learn called a quetap

each town has their own source of revenue

lots of streets that are very small like alley ways.

Castle notes

Castles were built near quarries so that the stone could be transported easily

They were also built near a body of water for protection so that they couldn’t be surrounded during siege.

Castles used mortar to keep stones in place kind of like concrete except made of stone

When visitors visit me in the guild this is what I plan to do doing as a way to show them about my work:
My shoppe will be me carving a stone into a circle for the towers in the mosques.
In order to do this, I’ll need to create the following materials:
Cardboard box
Gray paint
Chisel and hammer
For my costume, I plan to . . .
