Field trip to the Park Slope Food Coop

“On Tuesday we went to the park slope food coop. The food coop is different from other markets because if you shop there you have to work there. So every four weeks you do a shift for two hours and forty five minutes. Sometimes if people don’t show up for their shifts the people have to do their shifts for longer. And if they miss their shifts a lot they can get suspended, but sometimes they let you pass. They also gave us really yummy apples!!!!! They only sell organic food. The food comes from all over the world. Some of us got to see kimchi and sauerkraut from the Hawthorne Valley Farm which is where we went on our farm trip. So we thought it was kind of cool to see food from where we just were. We took the B train to 7th avenue and then we walked there. Then we took the B train from 7th avenue to West 4th street. Also you have to sign up to shop and work at the park slope food coop.” -Johnny

 

“On Tuesday we went to the park slope food coop. It was super fun! We got to go in a freezer full of ice cream!!!!! We got to eat really good apples! And had a giant tour of the store! The weird thing is, only members can shop there and if you’re a member you have to work there at least 2 hours and 45 minutes at least once every 4 weeks. When we got back, we had to fill out a worksheet. One question was “could we make our classroom similar to the park slope food coop?” We saw things like apples, pears, star fruit and dragon fruit. if you want to visit, it’s in Brooklyn on 278 Union Street. You can take the B train to 7th Avenue and walk over to Union.” -Freddie

 

“On tuesday, we went o the Park Slope Food Coop. We got to go into the ice cream freezer, and we also got to look at some of the food, and we got to look at the pumpkin grandfather. We saw people cutting the cheese. We also saw a conveyor belt that would carry all of the food to people who took the food to put on the shelf.”-Polly

Mark began his formal adult life in schools as a teacher of physics, chemistry, English and an experiential business simulation class in the public schools where he also worked as a school administrator and technology coordinator. For the ten years prior to coming to LREI, Mark was a co-founder and co-director of a progressive K-12 public charter school. When not immersed in things LREI, Mark enjoys spending time with his family and completing sundry home repair projects. He is an avid soccer player and skier and wishes he had more time to play the guitar and bass.
