Cooper

  • 12-15 hours of work a day.
  • The word Cooper comes from the same root as the word cup.
  • Cooper means container maker.
  • Coopers make containers made from pieces called spades.
  • Barrels are rounded.
  • Spades are held together by rings that can be made out of wood or metal.
  • Coopers make barrels, mug’s, butter churns, and buckets.

 

Joiner

  • “There are five types of joints, and thousands of variations.” -The Joiner
  • Some common joints are Dovetail, Halfblind Dovetail, Fully Blind Dovetail, and Lap Joint.

Wheelwright

  • Most wheels made were cart and wagon wheels.
  • It was about an hour of work for every inch of a wheel.
  • Wheels were mostly used for work like farming.

 

Cabinetmaker

  • It would take about 5 hours to make a chair.
  • To make designs in the legs of the table, they would use a blade thin as a string.
