Ryan’s Research Paper on Religion in Colonial America
Religion showed the differences in the three major cultures in the New World. Religion affected how people would live their lives and make their decisions in the Colonies. Religion tore apart nations and gave people hope in their brutal lives. Religion would give the Africans hope and a reason to live on earth. It would change the world forever by impacting how everything happened in the Colonial Era. It made people do things they would never do before. People practiced their true faiths for so long and then they were not allowed to believe in them. Everything can relate to religion in the Colonial Era. The world as we know it would never be the same without religion’s effects in the Colonial Era.

Women have been stereotyped. In most religions, which started around 28,000 years ago all refer to God as a man. God, the most powerful being on the universe who billions of humans worship is a man, not a women. Religion, one of the oldest teachings, telling people how to live and what is right from wrong is telling people that God is a man. Different religions may worship multiple gods making some gods men and some gods women, but most religions that worship one God, God is referred to as a man. In the Bible men have always had the more important positions and traits. “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong,” (Holy Bible, Corinthians 16:13). The Bible, one of the oldest writings is saying that men are strong and that women are not. People have been taught for thousands of years that men are stronger than women, that men are better than women. If religion never started, would women be equal today?

Religion affected everyone for a multitude of reasons such as power and hope. The Africans held on to the one thing they had, and used it as hope in the new world. Religion separated and brought together different races and classes. It united everyone of the same race and caused wars in order to gain power. Religion was a big difference in all cultures that defined them. Some came to colonial America for the reason that they wanted to be free from religious prosecution. Religion was the reason the English colonized there. It was the reason wars were fought against other cultures. Religion is the reason that the United States of America is what it is today.

Before the Africans were captured to be slaves, they practiced the traditional African religion. The African religion was their own religion but, incorperated different parts of christianity. Although the Africans were already part Chrsitian, it was still hard for them to be able to be forced to convert to not only a new religion, but a new life. Before Africans were sent to America, they lived a simple life but they enjoyed it. Slaves were not often allowed to practice religion but were Christianized by their owners. When the slaves came to America, they created the first baptist Church. When slaves came to the church, the were welcomed but not as equals. The Church was segregated so they were not usually allowed to sit with the English. I think this is extremly unfair because without slaves, America wouldn’t have been created. However, things really haven’t changed much because nowadays, people are still judged for their skin color and religion.
