Little girls often dream about big weddings: a white lace dress, and finding prince charming. But imagine not having any choice in who you want to marry. Marriage in early America was often the best choice for a woman, but could also be the biggest mistake. Often women got sexually abused and mentally abused. Miscarriages were not uncommon for this time. What if there was no way out of this marriage? You have no money and don’t know how to survive on your own. Women in Colonial America would marry men that were equal or higher on the hierarchy in hope that they would live and be treated well.
