Aprenticeship

I think you would be very lucky to get an apprenticeship  because it is a very helpful for your whole family. It less food for your family to buy and most likely they will plenty of room in your house. Just because you do not get paid in apprenticeship, does not mean that it is useless to have. I think that the only bad thing would be is  you can’t date in apprenticeship because men will be 21 when they are done. On the other hand, this could very good because then nobody will stop learning just for their love.  Also, there won’t be very many rebels because most people follow the contract , so they can have money when they own their own business. I think that it is cool that women get out of their apprenticeships before men ,but men can go to college and women can’t. If women can learn faster doesn’t that mean they should be able to collage? I can infer that since men did most of the hard work it made sense for them to be educated.I think that were expected to have a family and run the household. I do not think that these rules are fair. I think they are sexist because if they women learn faster then why not let them learn?

Punishments

Quote:

“Discipline could be harsh in colonial schools. Whipping posts, often with leather straps, found frequent use for those students who were unruly or made mistakes. The student felt the sting of a rattan, a leather strap attached to a wicker stick. “Whispering sticks” were inserted in the mouths of students to prevent them from whispering in class. On occasion, the whispering sticks contained strings for tying the stick to the student’s head. Slit sticks used for pinching students’ noses remained on the students for long periods.”

Ideas:

I think this was horrible because kids always seem to be a little crazy from time to time but they should get hurt for it. I think that the most painful thing on this list is to have a stick in your mouth so you could not talk during class. Does that mean that kids were not allowed to say the answer out loud to the class? If they couldn’t, that means most things were independent. I think that because of this, the kids were like robots because they would sit, learn. and write. Another horrible punishment was being whipped I think that this is horrible because not only it hurts it  is embarrassing because all the children watch while it happens, so it is shameful to think you messed up. This may make you respectful, but you loose your social abilities because you get meek and fearful. I Wonder if people who fight go to school, if they do go to a different school I wonder what punishments they get? I think that over the years punishment changed a lot, now you would probably get arrested for whipping a child in school. This all makes me wonder if they liked school? I can infer that they felt like it was a honor, but they were scared of the teachers. I think that These punishments were not called for and violent overall. I think that if they want kids to stay healthy and feel good about learning they should not make them feel in pain if they make a small mistake. I wonder when they would get these punishments? I can infer that they want to humiliate the kid by letting everyone watch them suffer.

Marcus notes:

The Gentry and Tutors in Education Source: Tour Guide, Interpreter at Shirley Plantation. Interview. Shirley: n.p., 2015.

Paraphrase A child of the gentry would have a tutor living and sharing the house with them They would usually share rooms with the older children They were taught the regular reading, writing and math. Tutors taught multiple languages until the age of twelve After twelve you were sent to boarding school In boarding school you would continue your education at a higher level You also learned astronomy After boarding school was college by the age of sixteen Besides modern science and technology they were more educated

My Ideas: Gentry children were probably stressed from all of the studying and learning they were put through. However, the gentry children were the smartest and richest, so they must have inherited a lot of money. There were probably times when the children felt uncomfortable living with the tutor and having to feed and clothe them. I wonder what the Tour guide meant by “regular” reading and writing? If the people spent so much money on this tutor, why would they settle for regular? Maybe the regular education is what the tutors would call the best for the gentry. But maybe regular meant that they would get the same education as homeschooling. But why would the tutors teach so little and then the children had to learn so much later on?
