Henry and Ribsy,By Beverly Cleary

For our very last book blog this year, our teachers said you can choose any kind of book review. One choice was an animation. So I choose to do a Lego animation. I choose the part in the book when Ribsy gets chased by a policeman. I choose this part for two reasons. Reason one: it’s the first chapter, reason two: I like how so much happens in this chapter.

If you did not get what happened, then here’s a long explanation: Henry and his Dad drive to a shop to get their car checked. They bring their dog Ribsy. After they get out, Henry wants to be in the car while it gets checked. His dad is fine with it. His dad goes to the store to buy something right across the street. Ribsy waits in the shop with a bone. Then a police car comes and the policeman comes out. He goes to the same store his dad goes to for milk. Ribsy notices that the policeman left his lunch in the car. He goes into his lunch and eats the chicken and croissant!!!!

Some frames later the Policeman comes back with his milk. He finds Ribsy eating his lunch! He drops his cup and starts chasing Ribsy. The policeman trips and Ribsy eats the apple from his lunch! Ribsy ate all his lunch. The policeman gets FURIOUS! They keep on running, but the milk the policeman spilled made a little puddle and he slipped on that too. Then they run off the Lego board. Later Henry’s friend Scooter comes by and checks his bike. They say hi, then he leaves. Ribsy come back and runs into Scooter. The Policeman helps him up and then goes back to chasing Ribsy. Finally he dives for Ribsy and he misses!

Ribsy runs into the Dad. The Dad makes the policeman happy again by giving him a croissant. Then the car is done with its check up and then they leave. Then everyone leaves. Then its empty. Then it’s THE END.   This ending part is important because at the end the Dad is the one who stops this half fight and half chase. This tells you that Henry is not the only one who has to take care of Ribsy. Also I tried to make this as accurate as the book.

George, By: Alex Gino

For our last book review we were aloud to show an important part of our book, we could make a diorama, or even a newspaper! I made a newspaper of some important parts in my book. I looked at newspaper templates on Google and used my favorite. I decided on a question and answer interview with the play director and the actor (George). I also threw some ads in there along with an editorial.

Teacher: I do not care I will not let this happen.

The book George takes place in a small school. In the school they are having a play. In the play they have a character named Charlotte who is a girl but George wants to play Charlotte but he is a boy! Then George’s friend Kelly steps up and changes everything.

I really think that this is unfair. I am on George’s side because I also stand up for the transgender community. I am on George’s side because I live by the words BE WHO YOU ARE.

51CUcv9tUCL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_

I will ask 8-10 questions about my character and answer with quotes and texts from the book. The book is called Dr. Fell and the Playground of Doom.  It is by David Neilsen. This  book takes place on Hardscrabble Street. The main character is funny and daring. The main characters are trying to figure out a mystery about Dr. Fell. The book is about a “wizard” and three character who’s name is Gale are trying to expose him.

The   Interview

Main character: Gale

Jett: Were you scared when you were in Dr Fell’s lair?

Main character: Yes the whole thing was scary. But it was an adventure to bring him down. But I would not do it again.

Jett: Did you think you were going to escape Dr Fell’s Lair?

Main character: No I didn’t. I was really scared once we were in I didn’t know if we would make it out alive.

Jett: What was the hardest part of Dr Fell’s Lair?

Main character: When I was looking at the monster, he was literally solid darkness. I had no idea what he was. But I knew he did not want to be locked up in there.

Jett:What was the scariest injury you saw?

Main character: When one kid died. He had no pulse then Dr. Fell brought him back to life.

Jett:What was your favorite part of the playground?

Main character:Jett: When we went to the pirate ship.

Jett: What did you think when old lady Witherton said she had to go alone to defeat Dr. Fell?

Main character: I was really scared and didn’t think she could do it. After all she was just a little old lady who could barely move.

Jett: When Dr. Fell moved into the house what did you think?

Main character: At first I thought he was a little weird,  but then I knew something was up with him when he built the playground.

Jett: What was your favorite part of the playground?

Main character: I thought it was dangerous but if i had to choose something I liked the pirate ship.

Jett: What is your favorite thing to do?

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

imgresThe title of my book is The Lightning Thief. It is the first book of the Percy Jackson series and the author of my book is Rick Riordan. The main characters in my book are Percy Jackson and his best friends Annabeth and Grover. The main problem in this story is that Percy Jackson gets attacked by a bunch of monsters and is blamed for stealing the bolt, a lightning bolt that belongs to a Greek God.  Percy Jackson is trying to get the bolt to Zeus. The setting of my book is in New York City, but sometimes they travel.

A big event that happened in my book was the first time Percy battled a monster. The monster was a “Fury”. He had no clue what to do until his teacher threw him a pen, and then when he uncapped the pen it was actually a sword. Percy trembled as he couldn’t believe his eyes. What I found to be most interesting was when he is in water, he is always dry. He can breathe underwater because he’s the son of Poseidon, which is a God.  This is interesting, because it is like having superpowers in the water. Another thing that I thought was interesting was that there were so many Gods, because I did not know very much about Gods.

One adjective to describe Percy Jackson is brave, because he went on a scary quest in the book to find the lightning bolt to give back to the owner. Most people who go on quests never come back. Another way to describe my character is prey, because all of the monsters want to attack and eat him. Another adjective to describe my character is sneaky, because in the book he snuck into the teacher’s office. In the office, he quietly listened to what the teacher and Grover were talking about. He also had to sneak into the underworld and pretend he was dead. One quote in this book that I think describes the character is, “I have to save these people.” This describes him well, because he will do whatever it takes to save other people before he saves himself.

I enjoyed this book a lot because it is very mysterious, and I love mysteries. It is also a good bedtime story because it is spooky and gives me fun dreams. I definitely recommend this book because it is an amazing story to read: it is happy and sad at the same time. If you like happy and sad mysteries you will like this book. This book reminds me of the movie Goosebumps because it has mysteries and fairytales in it. I would give this book five stars ★★★★★.

The Peddlers Road: Secrets Of The Pied Piper by Matthew Cody

24934636The book I read was The Peddlers Road The Secrets of the Pied Piper by Matthew Cody. This book is the first of the series The Peddlers Road. The main characters in my book are Carter, Max, and their new friends, Lucas, Paul, and Emily, but the story is mostly about Max and Carter. Carter, Max, and their friends set of on an adventure, because of a map given to Lucas by the Peddler. The map had a prophecy on it. The prophecy said, “Only when the last son of Hamelin appears and the Black Tower found will The Piper’s prison open and the children return safe and sound.” Everyone believes Carter is the last son of Hamelin, the town that was mentioned in the prophecy, and that he can save Hamelin. My book takes place in 2 different dimensions – New Hamelin and the Summer Isle. It is called the Summer Isle because it is summer all year round except for one night called the Winter’s Moon. The sun never goes down and the moon never goes up on the Summer Isle, except on the Winter’s Moon. When the dark covers the Summer Isle, all of your fears will come alive. I thought it was interesting that in the dark anything that frightens you will appear on the Winter’s Moon, also called a true night.

Max is a 13 year old girl and her younger brother Carter is 10. They were stolen by a magician called The Piper who was locked away in a black tower. He brought Carter and Max to the Summer Isle so that Carter could set The Piper free like the prophecy says. When Max and Carter arrived at the Summer Isle, they found a village where all of the kids The Piper had stolen were being kept. Max and Carter met Lucas, Paul, and Emily. Lucas realized that the Black Tower appeared on that night. That is a big part in the story because that is the beginning of their big adventure. I think an important detail in this book is that the hero, Carter, is a boy who has had a brace on his leg for his whole life. Carter has disabilities in his leg that he was born with it and it doesn’t work and I think it’s really unique that he is the hero. He is different than other heroes; he can’t run or jump or climb, all things that a hero usually does. The author showed that knowledge can be just as important as strength. On their way to the Black Tower, the kids find a village built only for dreamers and ghosts called Shades Harbor, where anything you dream will come to the village. The ghosts in Shades Harbor did whatever they did when they were alive because they didn’t realize they were dead yet. For example, one ghost was a butcher, which is what he did when he was alive

One adjective I would use to describe Carter is brave. He was very brave when he was kidnapped on his way to the Black Tower by Grannie Yaga. Grannie Yaga is a cannibal and a witch. “If you are a nice young boy, I won’t eat you,” Grannie Yaga told Carter. Carter is also very smart. He fought the giant rats on the troll bridge which was an actual troll sleeping and being used as a bridge. The rats were winning the fight but then Carter won the fight, not by fighting but by thinking. Carter is an optimist, and if he has a problem, he solves it with a smile on his face. A quote that helped me understand Carter better was when he said, “Words only hurt if you let them, but sometimes things people say are sharp enough to cut, no matter how thick you think your skin is.”

I really enjoyed this book. It had so much action and adventure. It also had friendship and care. I recommend this book, but it had a big cliffhanger at the end. I have to read the second book to find out what happens next. It’s a really exciting ending and it is an amazing story. I can’t wait to read the next one. Matthew Cody was also the author of Powerless, which I haven’t read, but I hear a lot of people like it, so if you like Matthew Cody’s books you should definitely read this one. From a rating of 1 to 5 stars, I would give this book 5 stars.

A Tale Dark And Grimm By Adam Gidwitz

The book I read is called A Tale Dark And Grimm by Adam Gidwitz. This is the first book in the series. The main characters are Hansel and Gretel. There are a lot of problems in this book including, finding nice parents, finding each other, etc. The setting of the book is in The Kingdom Of Grimm. The Kingdom Of Grimm is grimm.

One big event that happened in the very beginning of the book is when Hansel and Gretel decide to run away. They decide to run away because the king, who is also their father, cut their heads off. The king cut their heads off because he wanted to save Johannes, the faithful servant. One part I found interesting and very funny was when Hansel dressed up as the Devil’s grandmother. A part I thought was interesting and important was when Johannes told Hansel about his and Gretel’s parents. I would tell you more about what happens then but that would spoil the book.

Three adjectives to describe Gretel are rebellious, committed, and loyal. She fits these adjectives because she is helpful but when she is assigned something (like killing a dragon) she sticks to it. Three adjectives to describe Hansel are, brave, friendly, and sophisticated. He fits these adjectives because he is good at making plans and takes good care of Gretel.

I LOVED this book. I loved it because it is funny, and frightening. I like how the author narrates the book. I know a lot of people like fantasy, but I very strictly only recommend this book to people who KNOW they can handle violence. Those of you who can’t, please don’t read this, it is for your own good. A Tale Dark And Grimm reminds me of a TV show called Once Upon A Time. I think that because they are both classic fairy tales with crazy twists. I rate this book five stars.

The Mouse And The Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary

Zach

MotorcycleI read The Mouse and The Motorcycle and that title made me think those two things don’t go well together, so I wondered what it could possibly be about. This book was by Beverly Cleary who used to be a bad reader until third grade when she caught up with everyone else. So what I don’t get is why she chose to be an author if she wasn’t such a good reader until third grade. This book is part of a series called Ralph and the Motorcycle. There is a mouse named Ralph and a boy named Keith in the story. The Mouse and The Motorcycle took place in a rundown hotel in California, but it does not say what the time period is but it is probably modern times.

This story was about a little mouse named Ralph who lived in a knothole in one of the rooms of the hotel. Ralph is a very big risk taker because once Ralph went out on a dangerous mission to help Keith that involved the lower floor. He’s also very adventurous because when he grows up he wants to explore the whole hotel. Ralph never worries because he wants to go down on a lower floor even though he knows it’s dangerous. Then a boy named Keith stayed at the hotel with his parents and brought along a little toy motorcycle. Ralph noticed it and tried to ride it but ended riding it into the trashcan. Keith noticed them both in the trashcan and took them both out. Keith said hello to the mouse and Ralph said hello right back, which for some reason did not surprise Keith even though mice usually can’t talk. Ralph said that his motorcycle did not work but Keith showed him it did and he let Ralph ride it, which started a good friendship. In the story Ralph does learn that being greedy can sometimes wind you up in a laundry basket and end up almost losing a friend. One time Ralph had to help Keith get an aspirin since he was sick so Ralph went down to the bottom floor to find one. He went into a room with some college kids sleeping and found one and used an ambulance that Keith had as a toy, Ralph got it in the ambulance and drove it back up. Ralph decided to be greedy. He was greedy because he wanted the motorcycle all to himself. His greediness almost ended

up with him losing the motorcycle and a friendship which almost changed the book completely.

I liked this book because I was wondering how they could of possibly put a mouse and a motorcycle together but they put it together so that it made perfect sense to me. One other thing that I liked was that Keith and Ralph became really good friends. I recommend this book if you like adventures and fiction. A connection I have is that me and Ralph both like adventures.

I rate this book four stars.

Northwood, By Brian Falker

Imagine you get stuck in a forest that is in the deepest of the town where no one steps in by choice. You get grabbed by the dark trees that you can barely see in the night sky, 13_jpg_4e42af4ed8and of course don’t forget the giant black lions that will kill you in one bite. The main character in my story is Cecilia Undergarment. She is really optimistic. This book takes place in a town called Brookfield. I think it’s a small town because everyone knows everyone. This story probably takes place (time period) in 2010 or 2011. I think this because they had helicopters, phones (but like not high tech like nowadays), and tvs.

The main character Cecilia Undergarment is interesting, courageous.  She gets stuck in Northwood because her house falls apart (the house is made of balloons) and she is stuck in Northwood until something happens….  An example from the text to back up this information is “Cecilia didn’t panic, because she once read that usually if you panic you end up in a much worse situation than the first place.” Another example from the text is “I think she’s the only person that has come into this forest and tried to help everyone to get out” said a person that had also been stuck in North Wood. This shows how Cecilia wasn’t afraid and used her knowledge even though she is in a dangerous forest with no one expect a dog, and man eating black lions roaming around.

One thing Cecilia comes across on her journey are to twins named Avery and Evan.  Cecilia and them become really great friends throughout the book. Avery and Evan lead Cecilia all around the castle where Cecilia stays along with the many others that had been stuck in the forest. Throughout the book Cecilia always tries to come up with plans to escape but….WAIT.. I can’t spoil the book!

I really enjoyed this book because the characters all had a really well and thought out personalities so that made it easier to understand what was happening and why. One example of this was how Avery in the beginning of the story mentioned how Evan was the smarter one and later in the book he was the one who came up with a gameplan that was the most effective.  I would recommend this book for readers that can keep up with a lot of things at once since this book had many characters and different things going on at the same time.

One connection to my life in this book is that before Cecila got stuck in Northwood she had a neighbor that was super nice and a little chubby with a big beard but then he lost a lot of weight and cut his beard and became really rude. I had the almost same thing happen to my neighbor! I would give this book 5 stars because the end made sense to me and I realized how it all tied in and how creative the author was when creating characters. I really wish I could read this book over and over again!

Flora And Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo

flora-ulysses  Do you like superheroes? If you do check out Ulysses the Super Squirrel!! The title of this book is Flora and Ulysses, written by Kate Dicamillo. The main characters are Flora, a girl who has few friends and likes superhero graphic novels,  and Ulysses, a squirrel who is a superhero and likes poetry.  The problem in the book is Flora’s mom doesn’t like Ulysses near Flora, and she wants to get rid of him for good. This book takes place in a neighborhood in present day, even though the plot might seem a little crazy.

Ulysses is comforting to Flora like ! In the beginning of the book Ulysses gets swooped up with a vacuum cleaner and becomes a superhero!! when he sleeps near her bed. Flora feels safe because Ulysses is a super squirrel that means he saves the day as a Superhero. Ulysses is also very poetic. He loves to write poetry and express his feelings through poetry. For example when he wrote a poem to Flora about how he liked how he felt near her. Most importantly he is heroic like once he punched a evil cat off Flora’s dad’s head Also later on in the book a cat seems to attack Flora’s dad on the head! But then Ulysses save him by vanquishing the cat. Can’t you wait to hear the next thing that Ulysses confronts! Well I’ll tell you a little. The enemy kidnaps Ulysses! You’re going to have to read the book to see who the enemy is. Remember how there Ulysses got swooped up by a vacuum cleaner. When he did something happen to him… he became a superhero!
I enjoyed this book because I liked how the Kate Dicamillo made the superhero the squirrel and the sidekick a human instead of the other way around! I also liked how whenever Ulysses writes a poem they show it on the page. I recommend this book 1 because it tells you in the way that you’re capable of doing great things even if you’re a different species. 2 because it’s such a nice book and it teaches you lessons maybe that you knew or didn’t know. The genre of the book is a mix of comedy (it’s actually not so funny) and adventure. I would rate this book four out of five stars because some parts I either didn’t get or thought were boring. Other than that, read the book to see who the enemy is and what she will do to Ulysses.

The Vanishing Violin By: Michael D. Beil

6929700

Can you solve three mysteries at the same time? Well, the Red Blazer Girls can. The Red Blazer Girls are from The Vanishing Violin by Michael D. Beil. The Vanishing Violin is very different from my other books because I usually read realistic fiction or magical realism but this book is mystery. Mystery is very different than realistic fiction because a lot can happen that is not realistic but depending on the book a lot can be realistic too. This book is part of the Red Blazer Girls Series. They call themselves that because they wear red blazers for school. “They” is Sophie St. Pierre, Rebecca Chen, Margaret Wrobel and Leigh Ann Jaimes.

In the first book – The Ring of Rocamadour – they found the ring of Rocamadour and now in the second book they have to figure out who is sneaking into the school and cleaning it, crack a bunch of codes that lead to a violin and last try to find yet another stolen violin. This book does not ever mention when it takes place but I am guessing around the same time it was written which was 2010. I also think it is about modern time because there are iPhones, motorcycles and the subway. This all takes place in New York City and sometimes at their school, St. Veronica’s.

I think I would describe Sophie as silly. For example,  When someone says “Hey, loooosers.” she responded “Nice to see you, too, my dearest darling pal,” She also really likes math so that helps her figure out some mysteries. Like when she said “The ring is about three inches in diameter, so the circumference is a little over nine inches. (That’s pi times the diameter, if you’re keeping score-I love math.)” This book is interesting because it is from Sophie’s perspective like when she says “I” or “me”. An important part of the story is that Margaret is getting mystery letters from somebody that leads to the mystery violin. All the friends help her and figure out more clues. Will the clues ever stop? Also, the head of their school is counting on them to figure out is cleaning the school but with two other mysteries on their hands that can be lot!

Some of the events that change the direction of the story is at Mr. Chernofsky’s (Margaret’s friend) violin shop he hires someone else that seems a little suspicious considering he went to jail…  I really enjoyed this book because of how the author sets up the story and I also really enjoyed the ending that the author makes. Another reason I enjoyed this book is how everyone’s personalities. I would recommend this book to readers that like series since this is part of the The Red Blazer Girls series. Some connections is to the friends because I feel sometimes I feel like the friends are a lot like my friends. I would definitely rate this four stars. ☆☆☆☆
How does it all connect?
