2017-2018 Learning Habit Attention to Detail.

I have improved my attention to detail in my classes since the first trimester. I have improved on putting more detail in my writing. But, I need to pay more attention to the commas. This was especially a problem in my colonial research paper and was what I could have done better. In art, I had only two classes to finish my cube and I should have made it more detailed. At the end it was acceptable, but it should have been done better. In all my other projects in art, I have put a lot of great detail in them, especially my eye drawing. In math, my attention to detail has been good especially in the notebook checks. But, in the beat the basics, I need to check them more than once, which I have been working on.

2017-2018 Learning Values

The reason I chose attention to detail as my learning habit to focus on is . I also picked this because I can easily figure out if I need more or less of this habit. Since I had attention to detail on my Giver essay I did not have to work on it at the moment. Yet, when I had written my colonial research outline I did not put in enough detail so before I put in the note cards, it was very difficult to start writing my paper. In science, I looked over a few of the questions to fast and then did not answer it completely. I should focus on what I’m doing and make sure not to rush so I can put a lot of detail in the response. If I don’t fully know how to answer a question then I cannot put a lot of extra detail in it.

Current Events May 2nd

As you know us humans make a lot of waste. Sadly, this waste is getting into the ocean and killing sea life. But, did you know that it is also laying on remote beaches? On Henderson Island which is so remote that the nearest humans are 120 miles away, was considered as a UNESCO heritage site. This was because the lack of human interaction. But, in 2015, 53,100 different pieces of garbage were found on the island. Most of it was under the sand so as bad as the pictures may look, it is worse. This is importasnt to us because we need this planet to support us. If we don’t limit our garbage than this world will not be suitable for anyone to live in. Especially at our school where we try to limit the waste we put out as we have compost and recycling.

Guild’s

My name for guilds was Abadi Dahab and I was a Muslim man in Baghdad. These fifth graders are listening to my monologue. This was really fun because we did not have to memorize our monologue we just had some bullet points about what the main things that we had to talk about. Also, as you can see it was fun to make the costume I was wearing because you got to think like a Muslim man.

Current Events March 2017

Now you may not think of New York as a polluted city. In fact, now it really isn’t. There have been sightings of dolphins in the Hudson River and that must mean something. Though, before around the 70s, New York was pretty bad. You could feel the air and sometimes it would rain ash! This was due to many incineration plants and also the way we produced energy, coal and oil. We were also destroying wildlife by dumping ash into the oceans. Though, what we think of New York now was started when the EPA was founded. As you know Trump does not believe global warming is… real. Also, he is planning budget cuts for the EPA. He is planning to stop laws that protect waterways and also laws on using fossil-fuel to make energy. This is one of the largest contributors to global warming. Trump doing this does not necessarily put New York in the same situation it was back in the 60s, but it will start undoing what the EPA was made for. Hopefully the EPA will win this “battle” against Trump (even if it isn’t likely) so we can keep seeing dolphins in the Hudson River!! Finally this article relates to us because this is our city and it is our job to keep it clean so we can stop global warming which in turn helps the rest of the world. We will like living in this city if it is not polluted better than if it was. Would you like to have ash snowflakes while walking t school? Or would you like to have a chance of dying one day because, you had to breathe?

News February Toad Sightings

The cave squeaker frog has recently been rediscovered in Zimbabwe. There have not been any wild sightings since 1962 and 2 males and 2 females have been found. Scientists plan to breed the frogs to try to repopulate the species and believe the possible extinction was caused because of illegal exporting. Scientist Mr. Hopkins and his team had been looking for the frog for 8 years! Mr. Hopkins is now 75 and was not present when the first male was found on December 3rd. This is important to us because right now we are seeing many species starting to go extinct because of humans. This shows we have to keep looking for critically endangered species. If something such as salmon were critically endangered I am sure we would look for it. This shows that if we are careful, there could be hope for critically endangered species.

Current Events January Second Avenue Subway

The second avenue subway has just been opened and now serves second avenue with 3 new stops, 72nd, 86th, and 96th. The MTA says this will help congestion on the Lexington avenue lines. Though, how much will it really help if there are only 3 new stops. This is a project that people have been waiting for a very long time. This specific one started in the 70s! People have mixed opinions on how this will help though I believe the congestion is mostly in midtown which is not where this is built. Even phase two, which is supposed to be completed around 2020 would cost more than $6 billion! This phase 2 would extend the line up to 125th street and at that stop connect it to the Lexington avenue line. In my opinion this may help congestion uptown not nearly as much downtown as I personally that is where it is most prevalent. This is important to us now because we are the ones who are able to see where this line goes and how it helps us in the long run. Whether or not this line will extend farther downtown, I do not know though we will see what the future has in store.

Sam’s Current Events 2017

News December 1st Happy Holidays!!

Scientists have drilled deeper into the impact crater of the asteroid that supposedly killed all of the dinosaurs. This crater is under water and has one of the only intact peak rings on earth. Many other larger craters like Sudbury in Canada had their peak rings eroded away. Scientists drilled down 4,380 feet below sea level. If an asteroid creates a crater in the ocean wouldn’t the water come fill it back up? This is usually when a peak ring forms. Also, scientists hope this will teach them more about the fluid dynamics that happen when a peak ring is formed. A peak ring is basically a ring of peaks that are not all the same height and usually form when water destroys and existing peak. Of course, scientists do not really know what happens when a peak ring happens because a large enough asteroid has not hit the water in the recent past. In addition, scientists are trying to figure out why this crater’s peak ring is intact compared to other craters. This may be because it has landed deeper compared to other craters and the water has not eroded the crater as fast. Though this would not make that much sense because of the higher pressure of deeper waters. This would probably level out or make the weathering worse on the crater than others. In conclusion, scientists are just starting to look deeper into the mystery of this crater and why it is different from the others. They also are just starting to learn how much this crater could teach us about the fluid dynamics of what happens when a crater is formed, or just about all craters in general.

My Self Portraits

I call this art my self portraits in different forms. I created this art by taking a picture and drawing a grid on that picture so that it would help me while drawing my self portrait later. If I drew a grid on another piece of paper than I can copy each individual square. Then, we learned many different technique to make our portraits look better such as foam plate printing or brush and ink. While I created this artwork I learned a lot better how to draw a face specifically how to draw eyes and a mouth. I also learned how to do foam plate printing which is something I had never done before though it is pretty fun. My favorite part of the artwork is the brush and ink. This is because I like the contrast of the black and the white of the background, shirt, hair, and face. If there was one thing I could change, I would add another color to my foam plate printing. It just feels like I could add more to it. While making this I was surprised how much better the outline drawings of my self portraits got from the first to the sixth. You can definitely see the difference. A final thing I want to share about this artwork is that I also like foam plate printing portrait because even though it only has two colors it is something new and I like how it turned out.
