Current Events January Second Avenue Subway
The second avenue subway has just been opened and now serves second avenue with 3 new stops, 72nd, 86th, and 96th. The MTA says this will help congestion on the Lexington avenue lines. Though, how much will it really help if there are only 3 new stops. This is a project that people have been waiting for a very long time. This specific one started in the 70s! People have mixed opinions on how this will help though I believe the congestion is mostly in midtown which is not where this is built. Even phase two, which is supposed to be completed around 2020 would cost more than $6 billion! This phase 2 would extend the line up to 125th street and at that stop connect it to the Lexington avenue line. In my opinion this may help congestion uptown not nearly as much downtown as I personally that is where it is most prevalent. This is important to us now because we are the ones who are able to see where this line goes and how it helps us in the long run. Whether or not this line will extend farther downtown, I do not know though we will see what the future has in store.
